5-0 out of 5 stars Best Lean book at there on Product Development
Lean originated on the production floor over sixty years ago in Japan. But Toyota product development has been sadly overlooked by corporate America. Where is the connection between Toyota stellar production practices and Toyota product development? You can't argue with the tried and true principles to systematically eliminating waste--that is the bedrock of the lean philosophy. Lean thinking is making inroads to a number of different environments and industries beyond discrete assembly like car making. Does waste occur in non-manufacturing? Oh yes, and it has largely been an untapped, dormant opportunity for applying lean. Improvement initiatives are being re-focused on office settings and now product development. There aren't many product development(PD)lean books out there but, Liker's book is excellent--it is so thorough, well researched, logical and well written! A lean novice may have difficulty because it is not "lean 101" and PD is not quite the same as lean manufacturing. But, if I forced to pick a single book on lean product development--this would be my #1 pick. It is such a good start point for lean PD. The lean benefits are self evident: cut development time in half and never miss milestones? That's has been the Toyota norm. Liker's book will walk you thru the 14 principles on how to get there the subsystem levels (Processes-People-Tools/Technology). If your PD efforts are adrift, it's reassessment time. Start here. You won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
A very detailed and at times difficult read. However, it is a must for anyone involved in product development.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Toyota Product Development System
I found Morgan and Liker's new book The Toyota Product Development System to be an excellent discussion of the key fundamentals that are missing in Detroit today based on my experience in the automotive industry. The most important reason Toyota is best is because of the way they develop and value people. This book describes the basics required to build a great Engineering organization. Engineering is the foundation that drives cost, quality and timing. This book should be required reading for everyone in the automobile industry from top management down.Morgan and Liker provide a great map for going forward for any company that designs and manufactures a product regardless of industry. The key is to start the Journey. This book is a great place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Codes.
Being an architecture student, this book, and others by Frank Ching, are more than helpful. It really clarifies the IBC and makes design for studio projects go a lot quicker. Definitely get this book if you're studying architecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building Codes Illustrated: A Guide to Understanding the International Building Code
Francis Ching provides high quality, easy to understand, graphic illustrations of building code regulations. The chapters are well organized for checking construction documents for code compliance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Current

the right book, at the right time, in the right place... dubai

5-0 out of 5 stars A must - read for anyone involved in complex development partnerships
Although this book addressed many tricky scenarios for land use and development, it was the only definitive guide I could find that addressed the acquisition of funding for commercial (high density residential) projects involving multiple partners. I'm sure I will be referring back to it regularly!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Phenomenal Job!
I read construction funding, prematurely perhaps, as one of my first ever real estate books - and I loved it! The book takes the reader through several once-real-life scenarios and explains the construction process step by step. I think that both ambitious beginners and more seasoned loan officers and developers would benefit from reading this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good- but dated
Need a book like this but more up to date.Very informative though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone in or interested in "the biz"
I own a pretty sucessful bar in Santa Barbara California and decided (about a year ago) to try my hand in the Restaurant Business.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Insightful
If you are seeking concrete information into the whys and wherefores of creating and building upon a solid restaurant concept, this is the book for you.It is overflowing with detailed descriptions, practical advice, layouts, menus, square footage, operation costs... much more than I anticipated.Although at first glance it seems to be another glossy "picture" book with a high design value (which is greatly appreciated), it is in fact a true workbook and manual. The numbers are all here, allowing the reader to compare and contrast. If you are working on a business plan, this is ideal, because it is a great aid for making realistic projections.Restaurants That Work is extremely thorough and well worth the price. I am very pleased andmy only gripe is that I didn't purchase this sooner! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
This is a very good source for a basic overview. It is well-organized and clear, but it is only a starting point.I didn't have a clue about where to start, so this is perfect for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have!!!
I bought this bought and found it very informative. It is an excellent start-up tool and very easy to read and understand. After two year, I still refer back to my book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to get past the Typos
This book was amusing, informative and very easy to read. The author spends much of his time promoting himself as a Practice Manager and offers his help and his advice "by the hour".It is difficult, however, to envision the thought of paying an expert whose own book contains a minimum of 1 typographical error per page.I question the attention to detail and fiscal expertise of someone whose own publication reads like my 3rd graders book report (before editing).Typos aside, the book provided us with a baseline level of Practice Management information and offered a solid introduction to what will be a new endeavor for my husband and I. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Documentation
I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' forEngineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Industry Configuration Management Resource...
...but not for Software CM.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inroduction to CM
Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry.Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation.Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but annoying writing style
I had to buy this book to use in a class I'm taking.I find the information in the book to be very complete and packed full of useful information. However, in an effort to lighten the heaviness of the topic, the author resorts to silly interjections and comments that destroy the flow of the text.I found it jarring and annoying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, helpful for K-12 teachers
Popham's work is some of the easiest-to-read, least jargon filled, in the area of designing classroom tests. Chapter by chapter, he takes the reader through the different kinds of test questions, how to write them, how to grade them, how to tell if your students understand what you're asking; then he provides case studies, examples, and lists of further reading.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent FM handbook for 2001 and beyond
A very comprehensive manual (31 chapters, over 500 pages) for any level of facilty management professional. Each chapter is written by practicing professionals and "expert" consultants. Given that the field of FM covers so many areas, it is useful to have many different perspectives from professionals in the field formed into one big book. Chapters are grouped into phases of FM disciplines, i.e, planning, design, management, technology. There are high level topics such as Strategic Facility Planning, Sustainable Design, Portfolio Management and Business Transformation. Also very detailed, nuts & bolts for topics such as Financial Management for FM's, Energy Management, System Implementation for CMMS (Maintenance systems, Benchmarking, Condition Assessment, and case studies for CAFM technology. Brief chapter summaries are provided to assist reader with content coverage. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for newcomers to embedded systems
The book walks you through all the steps of embedded systems development before going into the details of RTOS, which is the main focus of the book. It is a great book for the intended readers of the book, as stated up front in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good VxWorks-centric Intro to Real Time OS
This book is a good introduction to readers who are beginners in the world of embedded programming and real-time operating systems. A real-time OS facilitates the creation of real-time systems, but does not guarantee that they are real-time. Nor does an RTOS necessarily have high throughput. Instead, they enable, through specialized scheduling algorithms and deterministic behavior, the guarantee that system deadlines can be met. Thus a real-time OS is valued more for how quickly it can respond to an event than for the total amount of work it can do.

The book is written for a similar operator to the author, and is devoid of good drawing examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Estimating
It contains most of the information I need to know in earthwork estimating. The instructions and guidelines are written in clear and simple English that even non-English speaking individuals could easily understand.Excellent reference for earthwork estimators.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to move dirt and make money, this book is a super help.
Very detailed and the writer knows his stuff. So often these type books deal with the easy "all you gotta do" stuff but this book leaves no stone unturned. Great information that any 'dirt' estimator needs. ... Read more
