5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
The book is really concise and packed with very useful illustrations.I would recommend this book to anyone- beginner or advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars $25 Cheaper Than The College Book Store...
I had to have this book for some college classes I am taking. I first bought my copy at the College Book Store but ended up taking it back after I found it on Amazon for about $25-$30 cheaper after shipping and tax!

5-0 out of 5 stars HVAC in Laymans terms!
This book is excellent! I knew NOTHING about this industry until I decided to take a class. This book lays it all out in such a way that technical issues have been easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Addendum to your HVAC Library.
I would recommend this book for enhancing your knowledge on modern hydronic heat systems.A great reference to assist you planning and doing a pipe-heating project. The first nine chapters are a good review of HVAC hydronic concepts and practices. The remaining five sections solve the crux of most hydronic heating domicile problems. The best practical book on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference & tutorial
Finally, a "how to" book that's well organized and contains everything you need to know to get started, and everything you realize you need to know once you get further along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Generally an excellent and detailed technical guide
This is a very thorough and detailed guide to what seems like every aspect of hydronic heating. Both theory and practical application advice are included. It is also indispensable as a ready reference for particular problems you are seeking solutions for. The cd rom included has many useful tools for estimating and calculating heating system requirements (there is one tiresome limitation - the cd rom does not run on MacOS. At the price paid for the package, it should!). Otherwise highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide
This is an excellent practical and technical book for learning about and designing lighting for a home. It's aimed at the professional, which I appreciate as an intern architect. Part of my job is to design sophisticated lighting schemes for custom homes, which takes a lot of experience and knowledge. This book has really helped me to pinpoint the different kinds of lighting needed for each space and how to place it and specify it in a professional way for the greatest effect. Most architects take years to learn this, but I'm getting a crash course by having this resource. It's not a fluffy coffee table book, it's a technical manual that teaches HOW to properly understand and design lighting for a residence. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is the best book that I have seen on the topic. The practical advice is well balanced with technical information.A must-have for any Designer's Resouce Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lighting secrets revealed!
As a designer, I can't say enough good things about Randall Whitehead's Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide. This is his follow up to his wonderful Lighting Up! A Practical Guide which has been a staple of the design community for seven years. All the best parts of the earlier book have been retained with the addition of more than 200 photos in both color and black & white.

Good book for the basics, but it leaves out auto a/c charging and diagnostics.Since I bought the book specifically to learn auto a/c procedures, I wasted my money. This lack should have been explicitly noted in the publisher's blurb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superlative! A must have!
Superlative! The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government.PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique.Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere --the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!5-0 out of 5 stars A secret weapon for the energy auditor
As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text book for environmental system course and design studio
A very clear and concise presentation of the basic material (as stated in the title) for all architecture, construction science, and interior design undergraduate students. The three tier conceptual approach, presented at the beginning, really helps the students understand the structure of the presentation. The "key ideas" section at the end of each chapter helps the students study for my quizzes too. I have found that the appendices and bibliography are very helpful for graduate students - further study. At the beginning of the semester, an undergraqduate ID student ask me what the relevance of the story about Easter Island had for her.By the time we arrived at the chpaters on "Lighting", she told me she got it.The biggest problem with using this book in a undergraduate lecture course for design students is that the studio instructors can no longer say that the students "said they didn't get" both the sustainability issues and technical information needed to have a strong basic understanding to apply to design thinking. Now they will be forced to invent other reasons for why students are not required to fully integrate by 4th year studio and beyond - and still develop strong conceptual ideas.Among other reference text, I also found that Allen/Iano's "Studio Companion" as a supplement is helpful for further visualizing the HVAC systems and their direct application to building design thinking. The major technical weakness/omission is that it is missing one good chapter dedicated to water - hence the 4 star instead of 5 star rating in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh Norbert!
Any owner of a pith helmet with attached solar-powered fan will love this book. I have only met one such person, the author. However, this book represents the most rigorous process for sustainable design that I have encountered. This is the place to start if you need LEEDs certification.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hoodwinked!
This book cost $108.00 and is full of errors. The instructor of my Intro To Control Class has contacted the publisher but to no avail.I am struggling in a course that I have always wanted to take and although my instructor is fanstastic this book gets a big fat F- from me.This book has failed and I hope that anyone who is forced to pay for this book isn't stuck paying full price. It's just not worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Another high-priced clunker from Thomson
This book was used in my "Fundamentals of Electricity" course in a technical college air-conditioning (AC) program. It was selected because it was the only text specifically for AC.We used the first third of the book.I'm an older student, have two years of university credits, and have seen a lot of technical and vocational training material. This book is simply awful.I have never had to struggle with a textbook so hard as with this one.Grammatical errors were abundant. The review questions were poorly written.Illustrations were occasionally mis-labeled, out of sequence or just plain wrong.Where the material raised a question, it was often left unanswered, but unasked questions were answered in excruciating detail.I had to use 4 other books to fill gaps left by this one. Most insulting was the price: $108.There are better books that cover basic electricity, some aimed at HVAC.I used Proctor & Mazur's books from ATP to fill some gaps.Additionally, ARI's "Refrigeration and Air Conditioning" has a good treatment, which is clearly written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic refererence for your HVAC/R library
I love the way the author set this book up.You gradually build on what you learn and never really feel that you are being thrown in to hard. The writing is fantastic. Not to difficult in technological terms for the novice and yet levels with the seasoned veteran just right. When you complete a chapter , you are introduced to a " In the field scenario" service call. You imagine yourself at the call working out the problem in the component. You see how to step by step, use the common sense approach to troubleshooting and gain good skills in those procedures. The calls vary from simple to very complex. One thing is for very certain. You will enjoy having this book in your professional HVAC/Rlibrary. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Really Good, But.....
This is a book with a good deal of information on solar homes. But the author repeats himself over and over. The book could have been writen in about 70 pages instead of 270 pages. Also the author does not give you all the necessary information that he could. Instead he refers you to different websites throughout the book. Before I read this book I had already done a lot of research on solar houses on the internet, though this does take more time the information was free and covered at least 80% of what is in this book. With a little more research I probably could have found the rest. The book is still a good read though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent passive solar book
An excellent passive solar publication that is very complementary to my own book: The Sun-Inspired House: house designs warmed and brightened by the sun.I knew that Dan Chiras had already published an excellent book with passive solar details so one of the goals of The Sun-Inspired House was to show numerous examples of passive solar homes while adding another way to look at passive solar.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, sound ideas, but repetitive and tedious
The ideas seem sound and helpful; however, the book would be better written more to the point and include more pictures. It reads like a high school essay that has to be 10 pages long but you only have 5 pages of material for -- so you pad. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent practical reference
This is an excellent introductory overview of practical problems and solutions relating to moisture control in buildings. The diagrams are outstanding! The emphasis is on moisture problems and solutions in low-rise framed buildings. My only disappointment is that the underlying physics are not described and that predictive techniques are not presented. An excellent reference book for builders, and a must read for anyone involved with trouble shooting, inspecting, insuring, repairing, and restoring building envelopes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is power in Mexico, lots of it, and lots of sun too.
It is amazing that some people can create confusion about a country. There is power in Mexico, you can visit the webpage of the power company in Mexico if you want at: www.cfe.gob.mxMexico even exports electricity to other countries.I am sure there are small towns or areas where there is no electricity, and solar power would be of great use, but that is not a general issue.Thank you for your understanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its okay
This book does a good job of talking about some of the basic aspects of heat pumps and there operations. Some of the illustrations are done very well to give you the insides of a basic reversing valve. However some of the information on there was old and being in new installation this didn't help me much but if I were doing retrofits on old systems it may be of more use. Overall a decent book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Troubleshooting and servicing heat pumps was very helpful, in that it was not written in techincal lingo, that a student or beginner would be come overwhelmed by and give up. It does explain the many different aspects of heatpumps and deals with different variations and operations. There are many good diagrams to show how items work. The thing I found lacking was step by step troubleshooting diagrams.
