5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a Must Have for Anyone Involved with Electricity and Electrical Equipment

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference in the Electrician's Trade
I can't say it better myself:"The purpose of this Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity" NEC 90.1(A)
5-0 out of 5 stars Required reference for handymen and professional electricians
The National Electric Code, also knows as NFPA-70, is the standard that building officials use to define what is legal to use in electric services of all kinds.NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association. The Electric Code began almost as soon as Edison wired some of his new lights in New York, and the first electricity caused fire happened.Soon thereafter the National Fire Protection Association began writing safety codes aimed at preventing fires and promoting safe wiring techniques.Today, more than a century later, the Electric Code is republished every 3 years. As new inventions and new applications for electricity are ever expanding the code book expands and is revised to define the new applications. The 2005 edition has been updated to include recent developments in available materials and equipment. The code has 772 large pages detailing every electric installation from common house wiring to installation requirements for 35,000 volt transformers. The tables detailing how many conductors you can put in a conduit go on for 50 pages in the appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a Must Have for Anyone Involved with Electricity and Electrical Equipment

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality book - oodles better than the paperback version
I bought this book because I am studying to be an electrician.I like it considerably more than the paperback version it is far easier to find section headings and sub-headings when you are looking for something. The paper is strong and glossy-white (as opposed to gray and flimsy in the paperback) and headings are in bold type and indented.
1-0 out of 5 stars BUY THE HARDCOVER!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Step-by-Step Guide on Professional Techniques and "tricks of the trade

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so good - Updated
After buying the Black and Decker Home Wiring guide and finding conflicting information, I decided I needed a more thorough reference (but didn't want to have to decipher the NEC).After a bit of research, I decided to buy "Electrical Wiring Residential".Within the first hour of reading it, I had two major questions answered that the B&D book didn't even attempt to address. While I've only had it for a day, I'm already 100% more satisfied with it than I was with the B&D book.My advice: buy this book instead of the less expensive ones if you paln on doing your own wiring and want it to be to code.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference for teaching I've ever used
I teach NEC articles dealing with low-voltage issues and grounding to custom electronics installers. This is by far the best book I have ever used as a reference and I've seen a lot! The text is very clear, the illustrations are amazingly good.I have spoken with Ray Mullin the auther on many occassions and am always impressed with not only his knowledge but on the TLC (tender loving care) he puts into each edition. You can't go wrong with this reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
Of the many reference and educational books I have read, this is one of the best. This book, the NEC Code and Practical Electrical Wiring by Herbert P. Richter and Frederic P. Hartwell have given me a thorough understanding of the NEC and the essential things I wanted to know before wiring a new residence.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Self-StudyFor Young Engineers & Electricians
This book was perhaps intended first for vocational school students who will become electricians, but our small professional engineering firm has used it for more than a decade as a self-study professional development course for young mechanical and electrical engineers with design responsibilities for building HVAC systems. We just bought five copies of this latest edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a handbook
I would NOT recommend this book to any electrician, engineer, or architect. It is extremely difficult to comprehend.Gaining any practical information from this book is futile. I have had the twelfth edition over ten years. I used it to study for the electricians exam.I hated it then.Since that time, I have found it to be a very poor reference book. The thirteenth edition is no better.I understand why some electrician training schools might use this book - it is very comprehensive. It would make a good reference for a classroom lesson plan, but not a direct teaching tool.If you want to learn the material in this book, get the National Electric Code Handbook (and related materials published by the NFPA) and appropriate textbooks. FYI - I am a licensed electrician and a registered professional engineer.

2-0 out of 5 stars A patchwork monster
Another motley McGraw-Hill product. First copyrighted in 1913. The author appears to have died prior to 1976, and the book has been maintained by hired help. Don't try to use this as a textbook; treat it as a reference only. You never really know whether some item is up to date or 50 or 80 years old. Examples: There is a lot of treatment of two-phase (yup, 90 degrees) power, including at 25 hertz, and of multi-kilovolt series incandescent streetlighting, plus knob and tube wiring. Also, it is stated that the highest radio frequency in use is 30 megahertz, whereas in reality we're up to 1,000 or 2,000 times that just now. This book is a curiousity; charming if you have the cash, but if you don't, maybe you should be getting something more coherent.

This is THE guide book for electricians and engineers. Almost 700 pages of useful information. The layout, tables, and ease of understanding have all improved over past editions. 5-0 out of 5 stars Not a training manual
In all states that I have held an electrician's license (20 years), it was mandatory to pass an electrical exam based on the current NEC.This is an invaluable resource and a must have if you are an electrician. But it isnot a training manual.Homeowners and do-it-yourselfers are best servedpicking up a how to electrical book based on the current NationalElectrical Code. There are several here at Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars New code book not ready for prime time
Here's a book that begs the question, "What were these guys thinking?" At NFPA, it seems the voltage is on but nobody's home. The new large format doesn't make the book any easier to interpret orinformation easier to find, perpetually sore subjects among users of pastcode books. The text might be larger, which is fine for us aging boomerswith reading deficiencies, but that's not a good enough reason to radicallyalter a long-established format. Further, it seems NFPA intended thisedition for office use, not field use. Those of us who carry the books inour trucks have ready-made spots for the old 5x7.5 editions. This big bookis klutzy and subject to vastly more damage in everyday use.Read more

Editorial Review

One of the most daunting endeavors for any would-be do-it-yourselfer is dealing with the electrical--namely, electrical repairs, improvements, and wiring and rewiring projects. The reason for this is simple: mistakes can cause fires, major disasters and expense, and even death. But anyone can learn about safe and correct wiring in order to complete repairs or add new wiring to an aging and inadequate system. This is the book to show you how, from the basics of how electricity works and simple repairs and projects, all the way to complicated rewiring you might otherwise assume must be done by a professional. Included are the most up-to-date electrical code requirements; guides to evaluating, planning, and installing new electrical circuits; repair advice on switches, receptacles, and fixtures; and a detailed and well-illustrated lighting design section. A total of 288 pages of hundreds of illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive reference index make this an ideal book for the beginner, and an up-to-date refresher course for the professional. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Guide to Home Wiring - 3rd Edition: Includes Information on Home Electronics & Wireless Technology (Black & Decker
I've purchased many books on these topics but this series is really well done. The illustrations are excellent and the overall layout makes it really easy for a first time do it yourselfer. I'm currently collecting all of the titles in the Black & Decker series and can't wait to begin using them in my home projects. Highly recommend for first timers. Good Luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for an overview, but not for adding circuits or anything more complex
I was getting ready to add a couple rooms to my house and wanted to do the electrical myself.I'm an electrical engineer and have done plenty of wiring throughout the years, but none of it that necessarily complied with the NEC.Oh sure I used 14 awg for 15 amp circuits and 12 awg for 20 amp circuits, but that was about the extent of the code compliance (out of ignorance of the code, not contempt).Well, I wanted to start following the letter of the law so I got the B&D "Complete Guide to Home Wiring".

1-0 out of 5 stars Book review...a lesson in futility
The author of this book apparantly does not know the value of proof reading. So many mistakes and items that either are misdirected, or do not exist in the text altogether. Never a more frustrating experience than reading and trying to decipher this poorly written book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors and incomplete examples, expect some frustration
I received this book on Friday and have spent some time with it over the weekend. In that short time I've found errors in formulas and examples that fell short. For example, there was a section that talked about how voltage drop is affected by the length of a conductor and even gave a formula to calculate it, but in the example following the definition, it used another formula that didn't factor in conductor length, without explaining why the length-dependent formula was not used. Another example: A calculation question on one of the review questions had an answer that didn't match the formula used to obtain it. After hunting around, I found the correct formula, which did result in the answer listed. Ultimately, I think this book will prove useful, but I would say to anyone considering using this book that they shouldn't be surprised if they find calculations that don't make sense and wind up consulting other books to make sure they completely understand how things are calculated.

5-0 out of 5 stars MEEB Bow Down
If you want to know more than most Architects and Engineers about how to design the guts of buildings this is the book to use. It's a fat guy though! Sometimes the text seems to weigh you down. Most architectural students consider it a sloug! But, once they graduate, they use it throughout their careers as design professionals. If you want to know how to develop a regional climatic response strategy for your building or development, calculate passive ventillation rates or heat gains and losses on unique configurations of wood, siding and insulation; size gutters or a rain water catchment system or plan for an elevator, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It has everything I need and more!!!!!!
This book helped not only me but my clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every cost estimate you need for construction
I have been using the National Construction Estimators for about 30 years now. I've found that their information is amazingly accurate. I first started using NCE for residential construction as a small contractor in the 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s I used the latest revision for job costing at major government facilities. Since 2000 I have used the latest edition to cost out repairs and upgrades to apartment buildings, and steel structure warehouses. Each year they get the latest prices and revise the book. This year is no exception, the 54th edition is full of facts, figures, rules of thumb, detailed material costs, and everything you need to figure construction work from the smallest job to the largest. Whether you want to add up each spike and yard of concrete, or figure estimated complete subcontract work, this book gives you the tools. Residential, multifamily, commercial, or government, it's all here.Over the years I've found the NCE to be more accurate than construction estimating guides selling for far more, and worth buying a new edition every year.

5-0 out of 5 stars response from the author
The previous reviewer comments on my saying fiber optic cable is difficult to splice. He takes my words out of context.I said what I did to emphasize that only skilled, experienced individuals should work with fiber optics. No one can deny that splicing copper cables is not as challenging as splicing optical networks, or that people without proper training and certification should not do so.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but he does NOT understand fiber optics at all!
My main grips is what he says about fiber optic cables (P. 73)
2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected !!!!!!!!!!1
This book might have a lot of useful information, but it definitely wasn't what I expected. The book is literally too small. What I expected was a very large book with many photos of electrical equipment in commercial buildings, enough photos to thoroughly educate someone in the design of commercial building electrical systems. It seems that everyone compromises when writing a technical book like this,,,,,,,,and that is what makes people like me return such books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me feel smarter!
I am desk jockey who does electrical design work. I have little in-the-field electrical experience. I use the NEC codes frequently to make sure what I design is code-compliant. I have a copy of the standard 1999 NEC book and found many parts of it difficult to interpret. This new "handbook" version has answered all of the questions and uncertainties I had about the code.It has an illustration and explanation for just about every question I could think of. Even when I don't need a certain thing, I have found myself leafing through the book just to learn more.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
If you hang around with fellow homeowners, there's a lot of water cooler conversation about various things, including the electrical code. This book just nails everything you ever wondered about, everything you haven't yet wondered about, and a few thousand things that you'll never need to know.Want to install a subpanel?Want to figure what gauge of cable to use to supply it?Want to know how to calculate the in^3 fill of a box?How deep to bury an underground cable? How to use raceways? That information totals about 1/4 of 1% of the contents of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Residential Wiring
This is a great textbook for the beginning and intermediate level electricians. The text stays detailed yet organized as you follow steps in the process of wiring a typical house. It is based on the 2002 NEC so everything is updated and to code. The study questions, and chapter end summaries are key features that will aid in the learning process. I believe this book is a great bridge from classroom study to on-the-job training.I will use this book and would highly recommend it to others. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction despite some errors
this is a good book for a technician or an engineer trying to get up to speed on the subject. Some typos and misprints are amusing. There are a number of disconnections between the illustrations and the text whichoccasionally make for difficult reading.
