A Master Class In Hazard Avoidance And Mitigation
"What Went Wrong?" is a well thought-out book on practical safety in the chemical processing industry. The book recounts numerous actual process plant accidents and incidents, includes causes and effects, and avoidance and mitigation practices.
Itemized Case History of Accidents in the Chemical Industry
What I like most about this book is its index and table of contents. It is easy to find a type of accident. For example, when I turned to page 291, I found an exact, simple description of the dangers resulting from the flow of a non-conducting liquid, i.e., one with a low dielectric constant --- like toluene (2.4 compared to water with a constant of 80). "The danger is that a spark could discharge between a body of liquid and grounded metal." In other words, a high voltage shock will knock you off your feet.

Good basic but needs an update urgently
First some positive news : this book certainly gives an overview of the problems a process plant engineer will have to face. Many practical examples are given, and after some general introduction there are separate chapters per typical equipment (e.g. pumps, heat exchangers, etc.). It is also positive the non-american majority of the world is not forgotten : there are metric dimensions on the figures.
The missing Link
This book bridges the gap between College and the work environment. After reading the first two chapters I felt as if I am ready to go out and manage the construction of a Refinery. That is the kind of confidence this book instills in you. Can you imagine how I would feel upon completing this book? I can't wait.

Good for engineers starting the career
The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig. ... Process troubleshooting book.
Boringless, easy to understand and real practical book. Reading this book I have troubleshoot many process problems effectively.
Unique style
The unique style of the author explaining basic concepts with everyday problem expamples is what makes this book very absorbing and useful.

Great for students/interns and young process engineers!
I'm a summer intern in an oil refinery and few of my tasks were to rerate exchangers, fin fan coolers, etc., and I didn't have any experience whatsoever! They don't teach at school how this equipment works in a process context and if you don't have a clue on what you're doing, this is the best book to refer to.It is very elementary, but at the same time, it can be very specific.It goes through fundamental steps for troubleshooting general processes as well as clear explanations of how most of the equipment in the industry work.Highly recommended at any level! ... A must on your professional library
This book and the companion volumes are some of the best tools available for process engieers in the design business. Ludwig has been able to capture a balance between the theory and the real world.An excellentapplication book highly illustrated and with excellent method summaries andexamples.

Project Execution Methodology -- Foundation Builder
I am about 50% through the book, and it has provided me with a good baseline approach to small & large projects. I have worked in process engineering, manufacturing, and process automation/control, but I havenever professionally executed a chemical construction project. The book haseverything you need to formalize a project execution methodology, includingestimating rules-of-thumb and expected outcomes of each phase in theproject. Good read, good analysis
The book is divided into two parts.The first part tells the "story" of Love Canal five times, each from the perspective of a different interest group: the chemical company that produced the wastes, the homeowners affected, the New York Health Department, etc.These stories are different, often inconsistent.The second part reconciles, so far as is reasonable, the conflicting claims.Like peeling the layers of an onion to finally get to the core, we get an unusually cogent view of what really happened at Love Canal -- and what did not happen.

This book provides a systematic, balanced account of the history of Love Canal as it concerns various interested groups--Hooker Chemical, Love Canal Homeowner's Association, Niagara Falls School Board, press, etc.It isunique in that it does not lean toward any one side in its recounting ofthe various sides of the story.Its analysis of the impact of the eventsand the where the responsibilities might rest is certainly one of the bestI've read.Also a terrific book on EPA response to a policy crisis--itprovides a springboard to further discussion of the media's role in publicpolicy as it concerns environmental issues. ...
