A Good Introduction to the Topic of Petroleum Refining
My boss at work gave me this book in an effort to get me up to speed on the industries we monitor.Having absolutely no background in oil and natural gas (beyond some general remarks dropped here and there in my undergraduate engineering curriculum), I found the text to be very informative, albeit in a non-technical way.Potential readers of this text should note that the information is highly focused- the author only covers refining of petroleum, and not other topics of interest, such as oil field exploration and development or petrochemicals manufacturing.
Overrated
Recommended this to students but they found too much bad information. Maybe nontechnical means not worried about details being correct.

Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling and Production (2nd Edition)
I am a new Environmental Planner to the oil and gas industry, this book has been an integral part of my learning process. Easy to read and quite thorough- I am very satisfied and haven't found the need for another book.

Easy as pie.
The nontechnical guide arrived in the mail in the speedy fashion typical of Amazon.I ripped into the packaging, withdrawing my hardbound book on Petroleum knowledge.I quicklyflew threw the pages of the book, noting how the information was presented.Well organized according to subject, ie Geology, exploration, Drilling and Production,each one of these areas of the oil industry was explained in simple, easy to understand language, and would allow this book to be used as a class room text.There were many pictures, diagrams and drawn out explanations about the subject being explained.The material presented information in a specific area and in a manner that was easy to absorb, find again and use.
Very informative book - a must have for the Petroleum industry
We purchased this book to supplement some internal training for our company. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have found, and we did a lot of research. We will be using it for a pre-requisite to a geology course for all of our new employees.

$25 Cheaper Than The College Book Store...
I had to have this book for some college classes I am taking. I first bought my copy at the College Book Store but ended up taking it back after I found it on Amazon for about $25-$30 cheaper after shipping and tax!

HVAC in Laymans terms!

I would give the damn thing 10 stars
If you are a Chem-E and don't own this book then you might as well kill yourself, or switch to mechanical.

The CD doesn't replace the hardcopy
The platinum edition is perfect - CD and hardcopy.While the CD doesn't replace the hardcopy it is very handy for it's portability and the accuracy of the 'active charts'.

Good basic but needs an update urgently
First some positive news : this book certainly gives an overview of the problems a process plant engineer will have to face. Many practical examples are given, and after some general introduction there are separate chapters per typical equipment (e.g. pumps, heat exchangers, etc.). It is also positive the non-american majority of the world is not forgotten : there are metric dimensions on the figures.
The missing Link
This book bridges the gap between College and the work environment. After reading the first two chapters I felt as if I am ready to go out and manage the construction of a Refinery. That is the kind of confidence this book instills in you. Can you imagine how I would feel upon completing this book? I can't wait.

Good for engineers starting the career
The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig. ... Good solid book
I'm not a mechanical engineer and I have been able to follow the book well. It goes really in depth in some places, so you have to know when to skip a few pages. But it is fine for a final year undergrad course, and I'm sure it would work for a grad course as well, but if you don't have a good math and science background (ie engineering), then just research www.howstuffworks.com and then subscribe to a few car magazines. There is a lot of practical info in here as well, but don't kid yourself, most of this is theoretical backround. I am an electrical engineer who wanted to get into hybrid vehicles, and I think if you are like me and want to just buy one book on ICEs, this is it.

A really scientific approach to the engine practice
This book is my Bible. It does not explain you how to add 2HP to the engine, it explains how all that works and why, with theory, numbers and serious real world tests. the Bible for engine related study and research

A Must-Have in Chemical Engineering
If you are a chemical engineer and do not own this text, you will have a hard time. This text covers all physical properties of organic, and some inorganic, gases and liquids. It offers complete theoretical development and practical equations which are amenable to spreadsheets and numerical analysis. Particularly useful is a comparison at the end of every topic showing the accuracy of each method in predicting a property. Presented in tabular form, it allows the reader to choose a method which is sufficient for his/her needs. You may decide to choose a method that is less accurate but easier to program. Every chemical engineer should have this text. My only regret is that we did not have time in undergraduate to use this text. I learned its value from watching the graduate students.
The Classic Reference
When you need physical property data, and you don't have exact information; this book provides best available estimations of the physical properties. It has been a great help to me, over the years.
Excellent Guide to Workings of ASPEN Process Model
The book is an absolutely practical treatise of applied thermodymamics.The explanations of how to use property estimation methods are excellent, but invaluable are the comments on their accuracy and recommendations as to when to use which method.Read more

A classic text in a new edition.
Having worn out my original copy, purchased almost 40 year ago,
This book is no joke
If you want to know transport well, this is the best book out for anyone.These guys weren't playing games when the they wrote this book.This book is serious, but don't use it as your introductory transport book beacues it is too advanced to start with, due to the fact that it is a graduate text.Once you have a grasp for the subject then you definitely need to check it out.Look in any other book and they will have it as a reference.I dont't know why these guys don't write more books.

Solid textbook
This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. The authors explain everything in a clear and cohesive manner. Somethings are overwhelming, but it is thermodynamics. Plenty of appendixes for steam tables, interroplation, unit conversions, and virial equation constants, etc.

Must read for polymer chemistry!
Odian offers a comprehensive guide to polymer chemistry, covering nearly all the types of polymerization, exploring radical, ionic, step, and copolymerization mechanisms and kinetics in sufficient detail. Some recent advances in polymer synthesis are not covered, but book offers enough knowledge to have a good grasp of all aspects of polymerizations. A must read for anyone considering a career or education in polymer synthesis!

Great text book!
I took a course last year in Polymer Chemistry and this text was the standard text book. It was an amazingly great reference book. This book mainly target on Polymerization synthesis and characterization. If you are interested in the mechanical properties of polymer, you should look for other one. But this is a must for all polymer chemists and material scientists who are interested in polymer processing.

A handy reference
I have been using this book for several years, including a term where it was the primary text for a graduate-level Introduction to Polymers course.As textbooks go, I have found this one relatively easy to read, and the concepts easy to follow.It it quite comprehensive, but assumes an undergraduate background in organic and physical chemistry.Since the course, it has been a handy reference in my research, though, as someone else noted, it is lacking in respect to living polymerizations, particularly Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization.However, Odian's work remains one of the most useful textbooks from my graduate classes. ... An Absolute Essential for Chemists!
As a chemist, I am often in need of techniques for purification of various chemicals.Often time is a constraint and the "best" technique may be too time consuming, if one even knows what it is.This text offers several alternatives to the purificatin of most common compounds (especially solvents), including the best way to make the compound pure as well as other known techniques.One can then choose, based on the reaction one is doing whether one needs to use the best techniques or the fastest technique to get mostly pure material or somewhere inbetween.Unfortunately, often the text does not list the actual percent purity that each technique can yield (though it is often easy enough to guess which methodology will yield the best results.)An invaluable resource for any chemist, but especially for graduate students.

Great for the "Synthetic" Chemist
This is an indispensible resource for any synthetic chemist, either organic or inorganic (not sure about the biochemical section).This book has concise, informative entries on the purification of a vast number ofcommon solvents and reagents.I don't know how any chemist can survivewithout having this on his/her bookshelf!

Great for the Organic Chemist
Like Carey & Sundberg, Jerry March, the Aldrich catalog, and the Merck Index, (etc.), this book should be a benchmate for the Organic Chemist.It is very good when one requires the purification of reagents, or thedrying/purification of solvents.The protocols for purification areusually pretreatment followed by distillation or recrystallization, and canbe carried out to give anywhere from moderately pure material, to givingthe pure, pure substance.Read more

Good book to get started
As has been said previously, there are few pricing details in this book.Not that they would help me in 2004, since this book is getting on in years.Other than that, it's an excellent reference for things you probably aren't thinking about.It takes a realistic approach to the problems a brewer will face and helps the reader to understand the many layers there are in opening their own brewery.It's not just a matter of deciding to do it and start brewing.I think some readers want their hand held through the whole thing, which obviously can't be done.Great book for anyone else.
