5-0 out of 5 stars hands down, this behemoth deserves 5 stars
Yes, 1616 pages and 2 inches thick of madness can be intimidating, but this book is sheer awesomeness in lots of ways. Whether you are self-taught, actually taking the class, or just want a desk reference for cell bio, this is definitely the one to get.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Canonical Work
This is a beautifully written textbook that presents the canonical version of what is currently known about cellular biology at the molecular level. The illustrations are clear and the text is easy to follow. The only shortcoming of the book is that, necessarily, it stays above the messy details in order to maintain clarity. The result, inevitably, is that some areas are glossed over (transcription activation is one example, but there are many others) and some areas appear to be understood when in reality there is a great deal of disagreement (for example, gene splicing). But these omissions are appropriate because the intention of the book is to provide an overview, not a specialist in-depth examination of every topic. This is a great primer for college students or educated people wanting to know just a little more detail about how life works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply love it---a plethora of information
This book is a wonderful source of knowledge for anyone who is interested in cell biology; or if you are studying it--like myself.I give a 100% gaurantee that if you purchase this book you will be satisfied. I just finished reading the chapter on pathogens; wow so much information - it's truly ubelievable. That is what else I love about this book: it can be read sectionally. All one has to do is read the first three chapters to establish a foundation of the basic knowledge; you can skip that step all together if you know your stuff. Simply put: buy this book. Also, I forgot to mention that it includes a beautifully designed CD-ROM; it has animations that suppliment what you learned and more--not your average CD extra. The reason this review is so short and concise is because the other one I wrote didn't get saved--that was the long one with detail. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Take care of yourself - immortality is near!

5-0 out of 5 stars Caution, Maestro at Work
Ray Kurzweil is utterly relentless, merciless, and authoritative as he hammers home his vision of the future. He doesn't just make this stuff up, but opens his book with about fifty graphs depicting the exponential trends in current technology.Graphs depict the increase in computer power, its reduction in cost, the nanotechnological patents applied for, the size of chips, and so on. Dr. Kurzweil doesn't so much indicate trends, as prove that they are inevitable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Theoretical Science Masterpiece
Kurzwell's vision isn't perfect. But part of the point of this book is that no one single person will comprise the evolutionary singularity, it will take every single part of humanity to plug into our world for that to happen. He's doing a relatively noble thing, standing on the edge of reality, and sending out a jolting vision of the future that is one of a kind. There's no need to worship Kurzwell, it's simply that people ought to pay attention to this theoretical science masterpiece and heed it's alarming beautiful call to arms against pessimism and backward oriented thought.Awesome. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile. The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update.Although this is the third edition (1998),almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters butagain far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars New Revolution?
This book is a really good read for anyone interested in technological partial solutions for modern environmental issues. Many great examples of processes which have been innovated, and what could be done.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unqualified Author
Benyus' degree is in natural resource management and all her previous work has been with wildlife. She isn't qualified to write about many of the topics in this book.At one point she attempts to describe things like the conversion of sunglight energy into ATP in plants and obviously she doesn't understand it so the reader understands even less.Additionally she admits to not understanding and not trusting gene transfection. How can you write about something that you don't understand and don't trust?I was halfway through the book when she started getting stuff wrong about molecular biology (my specialty). At that point I asked myself how much other stuff did she get wrong that I didn't catch? Finally, the author spent too long talking about the scientists and places she visited. How nice they were, what their labs look like, how much wheat is growing outside, and in general a lot of fluff that does little to excite someone about the science.
4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but extremely detailed
This is a truely facinating book.It goes into a lot of detail about the particular areas of research which can get tedious.I would definately recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive introduction to the field
This text is the best introductory book available, it is comprehensive and will serve the reader as a reference throughout his/her career. The authors have made a significant contribution to the field with this text and will help many biomedical engineering programs and their students.

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors make it hard to learn
I've used this book now in 2 classes (including one taught by an author of one of the chapters) and have both times found the book hard to use.It is full of so many small errors you can never be sure whether the problems you are having are because you don't understand the material, or if there is another mistake in that section.Very frustrating. The problems are not limited to explicit errors either, there are issues with the presentation that makes me think it was poorly edited as well.Style, order, and omission of important points are among the sins. Some sections are pretty good, though.1-0 out of 5 stars review of biomedical engineering handbook
subjects are old and out of date. For example, modeling of the eye, (...).This books seems like an attempt to introduce you to the research of a few professors who are trying to recruit graduate students.I found little educational value in it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted and confusing
This book is not the best as a textbook. Might be useful as a refresher or reference, but that's not what I had to use it for. It is wordy and is sometimes too detailed and sometimes not enough. It has no consistency, thanks to numerous authors. Also, the material is often outdated. Time to look for a different book.

3-0 out of 5 stars if(you=clinical engineer){get it=true}else{think again };
Seeing it from clinical engineer eyes is different than seeing it from a biomedical engineer eyes; however, it is not as thoroughly covers topics as it seems from the author's repetition in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great companion to the Cell book...
I use the problems approach book in my doctoral studies, and it has been great.I recommend this book if your exams from the Cell book are more problems and less memorization of mechanisms. The biochemical problems are varied and the answers in the back are simple to understand. This book get's 4 stars because the even-numbered problems's answers are not available to you.Our class does not use the problems approach book, and it is never mentioned that you will not get all the answers... I feel like I got half of money's worth.Still a good investment though.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book you'll find on this subject
I'm currently a medical student and I have used this book for for over 4 years (since college). While I could write a lengthy review to sing its praises, its simpler for me to put it as follows. I have churned through dozens of textbooks and this one is by far the very best I have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most worthy successor to the first edition
In the sixteen years since the appearance of the first edition of Lakowicz's Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy, the use of fluorescence as an analytical tool has grown remarkably, especially in instrumentation, available fluorophores, and practical applications. Therefore, itshouldn't be surprising that the second edition of the work has more thandoubled in size.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, new edition out soon

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for reviewers
I bought this book when i was reviewing for my Medical Technology certification exam. The book is more difficult than the certification exam. But the beauty of this book is that it will make you understand the rationale and principlesbehind all the laboratory tests and procedures. If you can pass at least 60% of the questions in this book. You have a good chance of passing the certification exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition
Amazon asked me for a review. For me, brand new to homebrewing, this book is disappointing.A major flaw is the poor quality of the paper, print style, organization, and just read-ability of the book.It is not very inviting.I was about to return it to Amazon, but would only get only get a few bucks back after the return postage; therefore, I will donate it to my local library.I am still looking for a good homebrew starter book for Extract brewing, which may lead me to All-grain.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Must Praise This Book
This book helped me in a lot of ways. Not just the know how to brew a great beer, but also the know how on ways to update, upgrade, and the inspiration to create new things on my homebrewing setup.A must have for the brewer of all ages and also all levels of skill.

3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable reference, but not a great improvement over 2nd Ed.
There is a wealth of information in this book...as there was in the 2nd Edition. Some of the recipes, ingredients and beer style information are updated. But I just cannot get past a feeling that Charlie isn't *really* up on the homebrewing gear that's out there and in common use.

How can you tell when a scientific theory is revolutionary?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for those of us who wonder.
Kaufman is not a "science writer", he is one of the worlds senior and most distinguished scientists and he has in this book opened his personal notebook of his most cutting-edge arguments and speculation.Fortunately, he also happens to be an excellent writer. As other reviewers have noted, parts of this book may be difficult to read without prior knowledge of the varied subject areas, but for those of us fascinated by how the universe works this book provides a new high-water mark of explanation.Kaufman pulls together his own and others' ideas in fields including molecular biology, ecology, complexity theory, physics and economics to bring into high relief a significant fact:all around us we see evolving and ever-increasing organizational complexity yet our physical and social sciences have not incorporated that fact into their mainstream theories. Physics has the laws of thermodynamics to specify how the universe becomes more disordered, but no laws to specify the obvious tendency of the universe to become more organized in the presence of an energy gradient.Economics has detailed theories to explain utility maximization and supply and demand balancing given a static set of goods and services, but no mainstream theory to explain the constant increase in economic diversity.Complexity theory provides mathematical tools and simulations that emulate physical complexity but it has not been effectively integrated into mainstream science.Numerous other writers have presented the idea of emergent complexity in biology, such as Capra or Lowenstein, but none that I have read so completely explore, elucidate, extend and defend with experimental evidence the concept as Kaufman does in this book. Buy and read this book.If at first you don't get it, read some related books and come back to it.It is very exciting to feel the approaching wave of a revolution in scientific thinking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Questions which shake science
This is a great book. Not by the suggested answers to the problems related to the notion of Life, but by the questions which are asked. It breaks dogmas in physics which simply do not allow the comprehension of biology from a physical perspective. Kauffman notes limits of our actual physics, and proposes tentative ways of exploring.4-0 out of 5 stars Confusion is Part of the Solution
Stuart Kauffman has been probing the "deep structure" of life for decades. He is one of the founding members of the Santa Fe Institute, the leading center for the emerging sciences of complexity. His work therein started in complex Boolean networks in which he found "order for free" in a void seeming to consist of nothing but chaos. This lead him to highly dynamical yet self-structuring autocatalytic sets (now known as "Kauffman sets") which eventually lead him to search for a general biology from which all of life could extrapolate. Kauffman never was much for neo-Darwinism or natural selection, and here he continues his holistic approach to self-organizing biospheres. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Save on Textbook
I purchased this book with a description of like new.I would say this is new.The previous person who used this did not even break in the binder. This is an excellent reference book,I have enjoyed reading the text up to this point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Basic Book on Tisssue Culture
For many years Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells has been the gold standard of tissue culture reference books. This new edition adds and updates many techniques and continues to be the best book in its area.I use it extensively both for my own research and in teaching classes on tissue culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on cell culture
Freshney's Culture of Animal Cells is a great book. It is writen on an easy style, it is concise and complete at the same time and it does teach you all the basics (and a little bit more) of cell culture. When I was doing my masters I didn't have a lot of help with my cell culture experiments and this book was fundamental for my research. The book covers everything, starting from the biology of cultured cells, equipments, design of the lab and asseptic technique and going all the way to primary culture, cloning and selection, cell separation, characterization, differentiation and more.
