4-0 out of 5 stars Fine book, for whatever it matters
The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about essential cell biology, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials grounded!!
I feel this is a very good textbook for molecular biology rookies as well as for pros wanting to revive their concepts ... Molecular Biology of the Cell could serve as an excellent companion book or rather reference book for this textbook ... the cd provided along with theEssential Cell Biology book is a great tool to understand the way things work ... in short, it is a must book for mol bio students to know what they are doing and to do things better:) It could also serve as a great book for biomedical engineers to grasp more of biology and engineer the concepts better. The book is definitely more simplified (kinda an abridged version) and easier to understand than "Molecular Biology of the Cell". Although, the size of the latter makes it look more formidable for beginners, I must add it is indeed a great reference book for researchers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good and Basic

If you are a Chem-E and don't own this book then you might as well kill yourself, or switch to mechanical.

The platinum edition is perfect - CD and hardcopy. While the CD doesn't replace the hardcopy it is very handy for it's portability and the accuracy of the 'active charts'.

2-0 out of 5 stars save your money for Physical Organic Chemistry - by Dougherty & Anslyn
This book is written at the undergraduate level. The figures are a joke. It's a paperback and will fall apart. If you are in graduate school; buy the text by Anslyn & Dougherty instead. It is a nice hard bound book, durable & weighs a ton. Its worth the money and the weight in your backpack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
It is now more than a month after I was supposed to receive this book and I have not gotten it yet, what the hell is going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update of a Classic
This is an update on a classic text that has been used by many graduate and advanced undergraduate students. The core of the book is still an excellent survey of older literature and of enormous use to students. There are also many excellent problems.Unfortunately, there is not as much new material or references in some sections.I found I had to frequently supplement the text with current readings. The use of modern theory is especially lacking. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding...
This is probably the best book of its kind in the vast and multidisciplinary field of drug design and action. Richard Silverman is an acclaimed chemistry Professor at Northwestern University, and in this book, he provides the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of the chemical basis of drug action that I have seen. No matter how complicated biological systems and their interactions are, at the basic level, it's all chemistry, and mostly organic chemistry. An organic chemist will find this book extremely illuminating in a way that would not have been made clear through his traditional education.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is an excellent book and it lies on the smaller physical side of organic chemistry, as the title says, instead of the huge biochemical side.It really was a fascinating book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check out the new edition of this book
There is a new considerably expanded and updated edition available of Silverman's already classic text as of Jan/04. ISBN is 0-12-643732-7. Check it out... price is comparable to the earlier edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.A MUST for anyone in biochemistry and endocrine
This is by far the best written and illustrated book for pathways I have ever seen.If I was teaching a course, it would be absolutely required.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Bichemical Pathways"...Great content, Poor Presentation
Comprehensive references of bochemical pathways are not common, especially with well described cofactors, modulators, and interactions with disparate pathways. This book could provide such a useful reference, unfortunately, the quality of the layout is so poor as to make it very difficult to read. Poor graphic quality, exceptionally small fonts, and poor color choicesrender what should be a most useful reference into a visually challengingdocument. At the price, the book is a disappointment, although the contentis great. Onewishes that the editors would rerelease it after completelyrevising the graphics and production quality, as the content is indeed veryuseful.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Biochemical Pathways..." - An excellent reference guide
The book "Biochemical Pathways..." is the book of choice if you quickly need information on a particular biochemical reaction, substrate or enzyme and serves well as an excellent reference guide. It is acomprehensive book version of the well-known Boehringer Mannheim wallchart"Biochemical Pathways" that can surely be found in almost everylaboratory on the world. The book is color-coded and in addition to theenormous biochemical wallchart data gives a large body of overviewinformation about fundamental aspects concerning enzyme structure, virusesand even the immune system. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Reference Book Ever for Polymer Science
This book is organized in such a clear fashion that you will find virtually any fundamental polymer property, its origin and related theories in it.Most importantly, this book collects so many property tables that you will be amazed by how useful it is in your research. It is no doubt one of the most cited refrence in publications.A wonderful reference book for graduate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never miss this handbook!!
I am working in Polymer relative field, and I need to know variousproperties of dozens of polymers. I am not a computer, so I could known allof them. Sometime I want to find a handbook for polymer properties, butmost of handbook only summerizes some common polymers. Thus, I can't findthe information through th handbook, but this book gives more than onehundres types of polymers with broad fields such as thermodynamic, mechanical, electrical, etc.. If you are a person who work in the polymerrelative fields, it is definately a handbook you need to have. Trust me,you can make it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Chem E book ever
I think this is the worest Chem E book ever.too bad its one of the only aviablable books for reaction engineering since levenspeil was the first to do alot of these things back in the 50s and 60s.there are numerous mistakes in every chapter.Be weary when using this book to study from.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent undergraduate book
CRE is not a bad book. The author does a good job of explaining reactor design fundamentals, from simple kinetic models to complex reactor systems involving heat/material transfer or multiple reaction contents. He lays the groundwork well early on be using simple, clear examples. There are numerous typos (mostly in the text, though, not the problems. The text itself is in large and legible type.In addition, the book is not overcrowded-like a lot of life science books-with meaningless pictures, text, history, etc (but it might take the boredom meter to a new level for some readers).Although not a big deal, Levenspiel uses some language that makes you kinda wonder what planet he came from. Also, the author puts all the variable nomenclature at the beginning of the book, which is really annoying because you have to flip back and forth until you memorize each character variable.Other than that, it should be adequate to get you through the course w/o a great deal of trouble.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too detailed
As a final year undergraduate, I find that this book is fairly useless. Although the information is in there, it is nigh on impossible to find. It would probably be of use to someone who is working on research in that field, but to a student who has not yet done such detailed work, don't bother. Save your money and spend it on beer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good with an adjunct
this is a very nice book with abundant information.there are few topics which are dealt extraordinarily especially centrifugation,HPLC,electrophoresis etcetera.i have been studying this book from my graduation.initially i used to feel some difficulty with this book,so i studied biopysicaland biophysical techniques by Upadhyaya and Upadhyaya.once i got the clear idea regarding the techniques,i shifted to this book.now i feel this book is very helpful.it is highly recommendedto allbiology students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This book is an invaluable source of information not only for those studying about various practical techniques but even those engaged in experiments in a lab environment. Written more as an overview, it works to familiarize the reader with the principles of both experimental protocols and the equipment that might be used, for example centrifuges. It's very useful to go back to it from time to time to get a refresher on techniques that I might use on a regular basis but might not remember all the details of. Highly recommended. It's also written quite simply, which unfortunately is not the case for all biology texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful, informative guide to practical biology
This book would be especially useful to science students engaging in a predominantly practical-based biological course. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK IN THE SUBJECT
This volme I have purchased yesterday from the local Book Seller. I had gone through first three chapters. Since I am teaching Biochemical Engineering to my Undergraduate and Post Graduate studentsfor last three years, I understand this volume is very much helpful in addition to some volumes I have in this subject like, Biochemical Engineering by Humphrey, Aiba and Millis (Academic Press), Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering by Baily & Ollis (Mc Graw Hill). However, in teaching the tutorials in this subject, an instruction manual consisting of solution of unsolved problems given at the end of each chapter of the book would be very much helpful. I have collected a such instruction manual (solutions to unsolved problems given in the Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering)(Gift copy) from McGraw Hill Publishing Company . I hope any such volume might be available for Bioprocess Engineering by Shuler and Kargi. If so, I would appreciate for detail information and way to procure it. It will not only help the teacher but the students as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but has glaring flaws
This was the book for my introductory bioprocess engineering course. I felt it covered the quantitative areas, such as enzyme kinetics, bioreactor design, stoichiometry, etc.., quite well. However, the qualitative sections, such as DNA replication, metabolic pathways, and cell function, etc.., are explained way too quickly and lightly for someone with little or no training in Biology. Upon reading a few pages into one of these qualitative sections, you quickly find the author throwing terms at you that he never defined (to be fair, it would take an extra 100 pages to define all of these terms). Also, the text has some really unfortunate typos, typos so severe they may actually hinder your learning (subscripts change for no reason, two different constants given the same symbol, etc.) Biology folks will be happy, but ChEs with no knowledge of Biology may want to stick to the section on bioprocess engineering in Fogler.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is so funny
Check out what that kid wrote on October 25, 1999. He gave the book one star. Someone find him and tell him how much of an idiot he is.He wrote the dumbest thing I have ever seen.Who the hell reads Perry's cover to cover. Is he really that dumb just go buy a book about making bombs if you want to "make bombs".Another thing any normal person would realize after the first million pages is that Chemical Engineers don't learn how to make bombs.what a retard.Oh yeah, good book

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous
the item is in excellent condition. The service is so good that I am gonna shop from amazon, everytime I need a book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text for those seeking to become a scientist.
The negative aspects that many reviewers seem to leverage against this book are the same aspects I find most useful and that make this text standout. This is an excellent text, written to help develop not merely an understanding of the subject material, but more broadly, to understand how to approach things like a scientist.I bought this book for a Euk MolBio undergraduate course which was taught roughly half from this book, and half from primary literature, and found the approach excellent in helping to improve the accessibility of any scientific paper, in addition to improving my own experimental design abilities. There are many useful diagrams presented, and a plethora of primary experimental findings that form the backbone of our current knowledge base. This book highlights the seminal experiments and thought processes that molded the field of molecular biology into what we know today.A must have, and an invaluable resource that will help the burgeoning, early scientist take one step closer to their future career of scientific independence and innovation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Understand and too much experimental data
I used this textbook for an undergraduate capstone class in molecular biology. The book is divided into eight main parts: Introduction, Methods in Molecular Biology, Transcription in Prokaryotes, Transcription in Eukaryotes, Posttranscriptional Events, Translation, and Genomes. The book is very detailed in its explanations of molecular processes and this makes it difficult to comprehend.Often, I would read a few pages and understand very little of what I read.I found that I learned more if I listened closely in class and only refered to the book for details, which is what I would suggest. Also my class focused mostly on problem based learning in molecular biology and less on memorizing molecular details. This book contains very few problems so my professor made up his own questions that he gave us and they were more helpful.

Hi everyone, I just bought the solutions manual to this book.It was in the NEW and Collectible section of this USED and NEW section. When I received it, OH MY GOD, it had DETAILED ANSWERS to every single problem in the book.Whats more, my physical chemistry course had questions from the book on its test, and all I did was memorize the solutions and got an A+.I can't believe it!
2-0 out of 5 stars someone really did only for the money or ....
simply this book is terrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Recopilation of material

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat more than an out-of-date catalog of tools
The book is a collection of chapters by different authors addressing software tools for various problems: database search, multiple sequence alignment, gene prediction, protein structure prediction, etc.A big flaw is that all of the authors assume a different level of prior background and have rather different emphases.4-0 out of 5 stars A survey for tool users
Like any survey, it seems to touch the major features only. And, as others have pointed out, the tools change but the book doesn't.
