3-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's perspective
The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters. The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars I did not even purchase this book from this person and it was sent to me by mistake I ordered another book from wich was correct
This book was sent to me in a mistake. I never ordered this book from this individual. Honestly I do not know how this mix up was caused. I am not responsible from other peoples mistakes or the mistake of your services. I do not denie buying a book from him because I did but not the Micro-Biology book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic 3
Looking for a comprehensive textbook that contains both a qualitative and quantitative accounting of the structure and function of biological macromolecules, the 3 volumes of Cantor & Schimmel's Biophysical Chemistry are second to none. Just the enormous amount of information included in all three sets, makes this a must in any biological chemists or physical chemists bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.
This book (3rd in the series) provides an in depth coverage ofbiophysical chemistry.Highly recommended as a textbook for students. It will also serve as a reference for experienced researchers. Very good treatment of conformational transitions in biopolymers. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good perl programming book period!
This books tries to combine and explain both bioinformatics and perl programming yet fails miserably at both. Though I have taken a class on learning perl this code is difficult to read and poorly explained. The bioinformatics is useless because the examples are simply stupid. For example instead of using free energy to determine RNA folding the author uses hydrogen bonding which is completely irrelavent or predicting species by using %gc or %at content between two organsims also useless. If you are looking for bioinformatics programming tips this book will not help you.5-0 out of 5 stars Develops effective genomic toolkits for UNIX, Windows & Mac
Combines intuitive derivations of most key algorithms, thoughtful use of key references to illustrate solutions of main problems with a detailed example, and develop well documented, carefully programmed, perl toolkit. The 65 routines on the CD in UNIX, Windows, and Mac formats perform most of the essential maipulations of GenBank sequences. I only miss Hidden Markov Model routines. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mere markets?
The fact that this book is published by the Harvard Business School and the author is a professor there tells us much about how this topic is broached. The main focus of the book is on how the infertility industry (the baby business) and the market interact. Other vital elements, such as moral considerations, are barely mentioned. And this is where the book breaks down. Yes, the market side to the question is very important, and rightly needs to be explored, but taken out of a bigger social and ethical context, the approach comes across barren and empty (no pun intended).
5-0 out of 5 stars The Birth of the Scholarly Page Turner
This is good stuff-if not juicy, and Spar casts a wide net that doesn't miss a thing: conception techniques, fertility markets, surrogacy, designer babies, human cloning, and adoption. The writer also has the guts to have a lucid, constructive point of view-never backing away from the controversial subjects many would balk about discussing. This book is a must read for anyone who might, is, or has gone through any of the processes above, and for the rest of us like me, just a great eye-opening read.In fact, I kept thinking as the pages turned: "I had no idea..."As a piece of scholarly writing it is immaculate (check out the pages of footnotes!), but more impressive is the fact that Spar's writing style is trenchant, entertaining and unwavering in it's ability to present a point of view to the reader.I wasn't expecting it, but Spar continually challenges and provokes as she weaves her riveting tale of the dynamics of a topic-both moral and technical-that is dear to the hearts of us all: babies.Wow.A scholarly page-turner!?Shouldn't there be an award for that? It's great read, and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative book, but problems in adoption industry overlooked
This was a very informative book, and I'm glad I bought it.However, the chapter on adoption glossed over the serious problems with the U.S. adoption industry. The book says that "adoption works."It may work for the baby-buyers and baby-sellers, but evidence shows it does not work well for mothers who are separated from their children by adoption. The book also implies that mothers choose to surrender their children for adoption, when in fact, most mothers who surrender their children to adoption believe that they have no other options, are uninformed about their options for keeping their child, are uninformed about the consequences of adoption, and/or are pressured or coerced to surrender. While the adoption industry provides privileged women with the choice of aquiring someone else's baby, it takes away poor women's choice to keep their child.See www.OriginsUSA.org and http://www.originscanada.org/adoption_coercion.html ... Editorial Review

Throughout the developed world, debate is raging over the use of genetically modified (GM) food and food additives. This debate, Canadian agricultural scientist McHughen holds, is not well-informed. "Everyone, it seems, is concerned about GM food," he writes, "but most admit they don't really know much about it." This is especially true in North America, where millions of acres of GM crops are now produced and GM foods are widely consumed, although it is no less true of Europe, where production and consumption alike are comparatively low.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In a future not so far!
It easier to destroy an atom instead a prejudice , stated in certain opportunity Albert Einstein.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Science based approach to a scientific issue
When I wanted to learn more about GM, I looked for a book to read that was based on science, not on rhetoric from activists that have only preconceptions and no real understanding of science. That is why I chose this book.Alan McHughen is not only a scientist, but he has done research on GM plants. This gives him a unique perspective into the pros and cons of GM plants and the GM process. He does a good job of describing the science behind GM, which is essential to understand for anyone interested in GM.Then he goes on to describe the application of GM technology and current issues. He emphasizes that one should separate the process of GM from the products of GM; something that the media and activist groups rarely do, further clouding the issue. If you would like to learn facts about GM so that you can decide for yourself, then this book is for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars PROPOGANDA!!!
The author Allen McHughen promises the reader an unbiased view on GM, especially the potential and hazards or risks associated with it. In the end however, he clearly explains the benefits, but belittles the REAL problems of GM which he avoids. It is a gross manipulation of the truth. He is funded by MONSANTO, a totally pro GM company whose products have ruined farmers in India. He calls all the hazards of GM mere myths - invented by the media. He fails to address any hazards and tells only half the truth. How can he provide an unbiased viewpoint when he has genetically modified food himself? If you read VERY carefully between the lines you will realize he contradicts himself several times. The uncareful reader is easily swayed by his complex yet empty arguments into thinking that GM is only good and has no risks. It is just a book of lies!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good introductory work
This is a very thoroughly written introductory work for biophysics, an area where it is very difficult indeed to find intro-level textbooks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting for Biophysics
This book is written by a biologist. However, the author discussed lots of physics topics closely related to basic biological phenomena. The most important role of this book, I believe, is making the bridge between physics and biology as well as biochemistry. Untill now, most of biophyiscs text books have been a kind of biochemsitry text book like ones. This one is distingusihed from those. This is also good for biochemistry student who wants to study physical aspects of biological system beyond the scope of biochemistry. Some parts of this book might be difficult for biology and biochemistry students but surely deserves to be read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging Inside Out
This book is a good mix between overview physics for the clinicians and details for ultrasound researchers. It has been invaluable to me for teaching the residents the physics behind non-linear harmonic generation and contrast agents (Chapter 12 and 14) for example. It has good images and examples showing the advantages of harmonic imaging and imaging with contrast agents over standard fundamental imaging. It has also been good for research details with equations and has a comprehensive set of references -- helpful for doing research in the area. In summary it has a intuitive physics and detailed equations -- therefore works for a wide range of people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Genetic Science
This is the best single source of information on Genetic Science I have run across. Comprehensive from history, to theory, to lab practice. Highly recommended! Great illustrations and very clearly written. Its targeted to people with a serious interest in the field, definitely not for the "Genetic Science for Dummies" crowd.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good enough for the first course.
Early on it is suggested that the reason the Watson/Crick team elucidated the molecular structure of DNA first is because one of them was a biologist. Good point. Allow me to state though, the book would be greatly improved if one of the authors was an English Major. Disjointed referents and misplaced series are distracting. I think the book was written to be used with a syllabus and study guide unless the reader knows the subject so well that nudges are unecessary. Try Watson's DNA book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Tissue-Biomaterial Interactions
This is a very good undergraduate level textbook for studying the events that take place during wound healing. It assumes no previous knowledge of biology, which is very good for engineering students. The text is also very intuitive and didatic, making it easy to follow. Many b&w images and photos illustrating the explanations given in the text.
