5-0 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with info on Development, sparse on Design
I couldn't put this book down.It contains a good description of instrumentation, including analog and digital filtering, signal conditioning, data acquisition. The authors' background is in cardiac care (pacemakers, etc.), and the book seems to focus a great deal on patient contact scenarios, whereas I would have preferred some discussion of instrumentation of other signals such as optical techniques (e.g. pulse oximetry), thermography, perhaps imaging technologies. It's a great book for anyone doing work with defibrillators/pacemakers, myography.

3-0 out of 5 stars a formerly essential classic
For many years the previous edition of this set was an essential reference in molecular biology labs.At present however, there are too many good protocol books out there to really make this argument. The book is pretty strong in explaining theory, and answering the question of why certain procedures are either necessary, useful, or worthless, however it is not as practical as many other books, such as Short Protocols.Still a good reference overall, but no longer stands alone, and I recommend checking out as much of the competition as possible before deciding whether to make the investment in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good approach to modern biology.
This book gives a very good overview of cell and molecular biology. The information provided is not complete but enough to get a solid knowledge about biological processes. That means you do not have to read hundreds of papes to come to the point you are interested in. Moreover, it provides you a good knowledge about different types of proteins and their role in biological processes. This is important because somehow they are all connected with each other in a complex way.

3-0 out of 5 stars "ENTROPY IS TIMES ARROW," he says.
Stars are only for creativity. For example, he adds, "the cell is very much an entropy machine." (P. 265)A more attractive title to this book would have been LIVING WATER.Pollack scares half his readers away with the CELLS & GELS stuff.I also have no idea why the reader would plug through 14 chapters of gook to get to the last two which actually frame his thesis.Chapters 15 & 16 should have opened the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars very interesting book!
I find this book one of the best sources that explain cell biology topics rationally; It is a good companion with molecular biology of the cell (Alberts et al).The author simply discusses the foundation of cell biology concepts from the perspective of biophysics. What i really find valuable in this book is the author's critical discussions of the hypotheses behind the acceptable models in cell biology. One of the clear examples from part one of the book is the explanations of the drug pumps associated with drug resistance during the course of bacterial infection (the author mentioned tetracycline pump as an obvious example) and cancer. How have these pumps been originated?Do they present in these organisms before the treatment (perform different function(s), for example) or they have expressed as a kind of natural selection to resist the cell death by drugs and, thereby, generate cell successors resisting such drugs?!It is not necessary to accept every model in the book or even the reasons that the author provided since one phenomenon can be explained in many different ways..I highly recommend this book along with the undergraduate textbook "molecular biology of the cell" by Alberts et al..

1-0 out of 5 stars Speaking as a current PhD candidate in biophysics...
This book is funny as hell.Honestly.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book to read about microarray data analysis
I have entered the area of microarray data analysis three years ago, having an engineering/machine learning background which includes good knowledge of statistics. After reading many journal papers about particular algorithms for microarray data analysis, I felt the need to read a book so that I could get the big picture of the field. At the beginning I was skeptical about reading Draghici's book because it was recommended to me as "excellent" by a biologist. I was pretty sure that given my background I will get bored of it quickly. My intuition failed me in this case because after reading it, I found it too as being far from ordinary, and answering my needs as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Great
This book is a must to understand fundamental statistical analysis of microarray data. Must have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Highly recommended!
Being a book worm, as soon as I started working with microarrays I bought a bunch of books on the subject. After six months working with this technique and reading chapters on all the books I've bought I can say with certainty that Draghici's is the best introductory book on microarrays. Other books around are better at describing protocols or explaining the math involved in microarray data analysis but Draghici's book does a very good job at explaining how to analyse microarray data for the biologist (and maybe for other publics but statisticians). Everytime some friend ask me for hints on chapters or books to read for learning (or re-learning) statistics I suggest this book. The first chapters are an excellent review of the basics of statistics necessary for day to day practice. The only complain I have is that the shareware software that comes with the book does not work anymore (it's trial period has already expired and therefore it is not possible to install it even if you get a brand new book). I read this book from cover to cover and I think that, considering how readable it is, anyone could do it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for all types of audience
It was a privilege to learn the subjects of SEM and TEM from the the author of this book himself (David Joy). This is an excellent book which starts from the basics and it depends on the researcher how deep he wanna go. The book provides in depth analysis as well if required. Great resource book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
Goldstein et al have written a book that serves as an excellent introduction to the SEM, and is also a formidable reference. When I took SEM at NC State University, it was taught from this book.Between our professor and this text, I learned the ins and outs of the SEM, and I keep the book within arms reach whenever I'm at work.5-0 out of 5 stars A very good text book to own
This is an excellent textbook for graduate students majoring in Materials Science. The text is easy to read, and accompanied by plenty of photographs and schematics, is easy to understand. Covers almost every aspect of SEM and X-ray micro-analysis e.g. underlying science, technology, and practical use. Each chapter begins at a basic level and gradually develops the subject to intricate detail, and depending on the level of study one may skip chapters or part of a chapter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good 1st transport book for grads
I got so involved with this book that I virtually wrote notes on every single page. The amount of useful information in this book has exceeded the tolerance the binding has for my handling. And I even took good care of it too! After my organic chemistry text, I'd say that I spent more time with this book than any other on my shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Briliant!!
This book is well organized, well detailed, and well articulated. The lessons are useful and the text approachable for an academic work. I've read / had to use many other textbooks in my pursuit of a chemical engineering education and this is the best. I give it a whole-hearted recommendation for any serious student.

2-0 out of 5 stars I heart this book
This book would be better if the author didnt have a tendancy to leave steps out of most his examples.Problems at the end of the chapters can be really difficult.I highly suggest using another book, or atleast having a good undergraduate text to supplement this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Practical & Useful Users Guide
From a users-perspective this book serves its purpose well - it explains what it is that BLAST is doing "under-the-hood" so that one may better customize Blast's search behavior. All I know is that I really learned a lot of basic fundamental core concepts here that I previously just took for granted.
5-0 out of 5 stars Blast User's Bible
This is the place to start for anyone using NCBI BLAST. It's a thorough description of the various BLAST programs for nucleotides, amino acids, and codons.
3-0 out of 5 stars useful for comparative sequence alignment tasks
BLAST is a well-known tool for bioinformatics (biological sciences+computer sciences). In this book contains a concepts of central dogma of molecular biology, sequence aligment, sequece similarity, practical BLAST programs (divide into 5 programs), and how to install and use BLAST tool. Moreover, it also offers enough tips to improve my BLAST searches usage. I think this book's content is well-writing and well-organizing for comparative sequeces alignment tasks. I use this book to begin in bioinformatics and it can help me to learn about this. But this book does not contain all of things that I want to known on bioinformatics or computational biology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
The book offers a comprehensive review on biophysical chemistry with an emphasis on practice, although the book may not be clear for readers without good background...

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE TEXTBOOK
I am a chem major at Duke University and we used this book in my biophysical chem class. The book is all around horrible. It doesn't introduce topics at all- just jumps right in and assumes an depth knowledge about chemistry, physics, biology. There are no sample problems worked out at all, and even though some answers are in the back of the text it's hard to know how they arrived at the answer without any examples to look at.The book is dense and difficult to read, and other books like Cantor and Schimmel are much more readable and helpful. This book presents all the topics, but still left me confused and not understanding the topics indepth enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS BOOK
THIS BOOK IS A PIECE OF CRAP AND A WASTE OF TIME TO FIGURE OUT.I WOULD SUGGEST READING STUFF OFF THE INTERNET AND READING JOURNALS RATHER THAN WASTE TIME WITH THIS PIECE OF TOILET PAPER. I AM GONNA FLUNK THE CLASS CUZ OF THIS PEICE OF CRAP BOOK.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A type of 'new biology' in which human systems and machines meld to form new possibilities
Can genes challenge machines? Author Robert Frenay is a former contributing editor of Audubon magazine and in PULSE: THE COMING OF AGE OF SYSTEMS AND MACHINES INSPIRED BY LIVING THINGS, he charts the shift from machines to biology bolstered by computers: a type of 'new biology' in which human systems and machines meld to form new possibilities. From robotics to materials science he considers industrial ecosystems in which waste products from manufacturing become the new materials for another endeavor, considering the changing relationships between mechanism and biology in the process. Supporting these observations and contentions is a history of such relationships and their changes, areas in which biology can be seen at work, interviews with scientists and researchers, and observations of mechanisms actually produced which support his positive visions of future industrial endeavors. His single idea comes from a researcher's perspective and reflects on the cultural philosophy and pressures shaping technological change.
