5-0 out of 5 stars Most Established Thermo text is also most up to date
In the new 7th edition I saw for the first time an equation of state explicit for density.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fundamental text !
As Chemical Engineering demands from you three Thermodynamics , this book is for you . I do not remember any other book so well written and with so clear explanation about the fugacity concepts for instance . The solved problems about the first and second law of Thermodynamics are extraordinary .
2-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Ok, so i am a chemical engineering student, and this is supposed to be the textbook. Which allegedly would later on make it a forced reference for a student. However, the only useful information is the steam tables, because the properties and other things are insufficient, trust me, the book has sitted on my shelf unused for a year and a half. I have not sold it because no one here would buy it. The explanations are poor. If you want to know about thermodynamics, this is really not your book, I would rather recommend a Fisicochemistry book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great learning experience!
The wonderful and numerous color pictures, the mass amount of info. I have been waiting for a textbook like this for years. My students have found the text very useful and important when studying for exams. This book has made my school maintain its high standard for its curriculum. My instructors have found it to be straightforward and unproblematic to teach from. I can't wait for more from Sandy Fritz! Wonderful I will recommend to all in the profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot
I am just finishing massage school and used this textbook. The way the information was explained and the learning activites helped so much. All the information about the sciences related to massage making the reading interesting. The chapters on muscles and biomechanices were especially interesting.Even if you have used a different anatomy and physiology text book I really suggest you get this one to understand how the information relates to massage

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy this!!
Where do I begin?Poorly written, concepts partially explained then abandoned, useless index, inanely esoteric exercises. If you are writing a science book why not present the facts in a logical fashion.I read the intro & preface & I know what they were trying to achieve but they failed.Classmates with & without science backgrounds were equally appalled by the uselessnes of this text!Every classmate gave it a thumbs down. Can't believe my school was duped into using this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this book by the microscope
This is the book that tells you how to actually do effective microscopy.Keep a copy by the microscope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Introductory-Level Textbook
Dr. Murphy constructs a solid foundation on the basic concepts of geometrical optics, light, and color, and then provides excellent introductory reviews of important topics in light microscopy. The book is very well written and complex phenomena are clearly explained without the unnecessary math that often confuses students.Illustrations are numerous and help support the text very nicely, as do the suggested laboratory exercises that accompany each chapter.Discussions of digital cameras and image processing are timely and provide the essential concepts necessary to tackle more advanced treatises. In the opinion of the Molecular Expressions microscopy website team, this book is by far the best entry-level textbook in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Useful
"This well written text provides a clear, uncluttered overview of the principles and practice of modern light microscopy. It contains many helpful teaching exercises and diagrams. It should prove useful in a wide range of courses from the undergraduate to the postgraduate level."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
"...an intriguing work targeted toward biologists wanting to solve problems...provides a compendium of many biological insights and breakthroughs and will be a useful resource...highly recommended." (Choice, Vol. 41, No. 7, March 2004)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for bioinformatics from a user's perspective
Unlike the previous review, I found the user perspective, rather than the mathematical perspective refreshing.I have been teaching bioinformatics to CS students for several years and all too often the students are great at algorithms and theory but do not understand the user they are designing for. This book teaches just that -- how to use bioinformatics from a user or researcher's viewpoint.Medical students and biologists will find it useful for direct applicability to their work, but I also reccomend it for bioinformatics students who need to complement their theoretical background with practical use.All too often, CS students of bioinformatics can design a great database with powerful access tools, but with a horrible interface because they don't have this perspective.3-0 out of 5 stars Bioinformatics for computational dummies
A genious attempt to present bioinformatics as if it is a discipline without any computational content. Perfect for students who lost any hope to understand what is the engine drivingbioinformatics tools but want simply to memorize how to use them instead. Must be a very comfortable reading for biologists but is as exciting as a long carefully designed restaurant menu for a mathematician. If the author wants to raise a new generation of biologists with this book then biology and *real* bioinformatics will be divorced forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching and Research and Van der Waals forces
I teach courses covering the fundamentals of surface and colloid engineering. The Parsegian textbook is ideal for either teaching a segment of 6 to 9 lectures or teaching an entire course on Van der Waals forces - I have done both. Moreover, there is also advanced material included that is important for applications that range from biomembrane physics to wetting phenomena. Even the price is right!
5-0 out of 5 stars Every science library should have two copies of this book.
This book is the best ever written about Van der Waals forces.Parsegian is the world's expert on this subject, which is essential for an understanding of physical biology and much of chemistry, engineering, and physics. Parsegian writes superbly and clearly. His book is fun to read. Every biologist and every biophysicist should get a copy. Every science library should have at least two copies of this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rebuilt.. review
As a cochlear implantee ( I also have an Bionic Ear from Advanced Bionics) I highly recommend this book for any one with a cochlear implant, any candidate, or just anyone who is interested in how this amazing technology has had impact on those of us that either suddenly or over a period of time, became deaf. Michael combines a lot of technological information, along with the emotional journey we CI users go through. His description of becoming cyborg and what that means describes how technology today can have an effect on humans. M ichael is a brilant writer with an engaging style. At times this is not an 'easy read" because of the many references to technology, and his use of a sophisticated vocabulary.. but over all, it adds to the other books that describe the cochlear implant journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting and unique book
I enjoyed reading this book. It gives a unique insight into what it is like to use a prosthetic sensory device. Chorost has done a great job of describing the odd sound sensations that he experienced as he learned to use the implant. Since he had spent many years hearing with the aid of amplifiers, he can describe the artificial hearing in terms of sounds that a hearing person can relate to.
5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine
Author Michael Chrost become a cyborg in 2001, when his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing, he became completely deaf in his thirties - and chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing. Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human provides an intriguing autobiography of not only restored hearing, but new associations with machine as a result of silicon and flesh joining, resulting in newfound social issues and ethical concerns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a quick, concise overview of the biotech industry
I bought this book for a biotech project management class aside from the required books for the course and found it more helpful than any of the required books (not on project management, but as far as understanding the biotech industry). It provides a very good overview of the biotechnology industry that would be helpful for almost anyone touching this field - investors, professionals considering working in the field, patients considering a new drug therapy or participating in a clinical trial, doctors...I would recommend this book as an excellent first read to get the "lay of the land" followed up by more in-depth research in areas you need/want to know more about. By the way, my whole team ended up using the book to help them each prepare their part of our final project, which was a product development plan that took a novel cancer drug from phase 1 through commercialization. Thus you can see the scope of the book is quite broad and yet direct, the book is only 200 pages plus several useful Appendices (e.g. one is on careers in biotech and another provides and index of websites for different biotech areas).

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Quality
This is in response to the review stating that a book was bound upside down.I would like inform everyone that this was an isolated printer error and in no way reflects the Publishers attention to detail or concerns for quality.Occasionally a make-ready (set-up) copy slips though which is the likely scenario in this case.We (the printer) take full responsibility for any inconvenience or skewed review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building Blocks
Yali's book is really an excellent starting point for many people interested in knowing the basics of the biotech world. This includes an increasingly broad number of people. First, I highly recommend this book for MBA students interested in careers in biotech and healthcare. Second, this book should be bought by every medical school and bioag research university and given to every new faculty member. Why in 2006 do we still find faculty members who have no clue about the technology commercialization process which has allowed their field to expand into a muli-billion dollar industry. Perhaps every bio grad student should be given a copy. The book covers much ground, sometimes quickly. If you are into the field, the book could have been longer and more detailed, but its emphasis is clearly introductory. The case examples are great learning tools and a bit of history for the industry. Learning from the successes and failures of others is not new, but perhaps the next version will include more historical perspective on the boom and bust in the industry. The cycles of mergers and acquisitions, public financing windows, and valuation fluctuations could be of increased value.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook and reference book for both students and researchers.
Bioinformatics is a burgeoning interdisciplinary field that holds great promise in handling large scale biomedical data by computational approaches. The book "Fundamental Concepts of Bioinformatics" is a very important textbook and reference book for both biology and computer science students and researchers, as well as for those professionals in medical science, and the pharmaceutical industry. It goes with saying that many laboratory approaches are expensive and time consuming, and cannot hope to keep up with the rapid growth of available data, making computational approaches indispensable. While a number of books dealing with bioinformatics, most of them are generally limited in scope, and very few of them provide a comprehensive but easy understandable treatment from both computer science and biomedical principles. This book is unique and is well-organized, and provides a systematic but straightforward treatment of the various techniques used for bioinformatics. One of the attractive features of the book is the comprehensive coverage of the various types of data use in bioinformatics analysis, followed by computational approaches that are most suited to the particular data type. This book also helps researchers entering bioinformatics. The reader can quickly identify the chapters that are most relevant to their own interest. It could also be used as a textbook for a senior undergraduate or a graduate level bioinformatics course. It is a valuable resource to both students and researchers, no matter whether they perform experimental research or computer science studies. Computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians seeking to discover how bioinformatics is related to well-defined paradigms in computer science could also benefit greatly from this book. Professors Michael L. Raymer and Dan E. Kranehave authored many research articles in both computer science and biological science. I highly recommend this book as a great textbook and reference book for both students and researchers.
