4-0 out of 5 stars great condition, a little damage due to shipping
looks great, feels great, smells great.minor damage on the binder from shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great intro book on Soil Mechanics.
I just finished taking a intro Soil Mechanics class using this book. We completed all 16 chapters which is quite a feat for any engineering class. 3-0 out of 5 stars Much to be desired.
I first bought this book as a required text for a couple of my modules inschool. This book is very effective when it comes to presenting themathematical formula, examples and graphs. However, the discussions oftests and soil behaviour left much to be desired. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessible introduction to a complex field
This book is advertised as a text for the lay person that can also serve as a textbook for levels ranging from high school to graduate school. Unfortunately, this is a drawback, as the book tries to be all things to all people. The book is written in a conversational style and makes use of numerous cartoon drawings in its explanations. Most of the diagrams are very helpful. However, some drawings are somewhat juvenile and cheesy with faces drawn on enzymes, for example. Extra wide margins contain definitions of words used in the adjacent text as well as occasional jokes and anecdotes. Molecular terms are redefined whenever they are used, so you can skip around in the book with no problem understanding what is being presented.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book, but beware of paper quality in 3rd ed
As the title says it,it is a great book. The book is so well written. I fist came across this book online and borrowed the second edition from the library. I am an electrochemist and I thoroughly enjoy and understand this book. If you want to learn about molecular biology, where the science is going etc., this is a good book to start with. If you are into investing and would like to understand a bit about what the nerdy scientists are talking about, this book will armor you with that knowledge.
5-0 out of 5 stars STRONG BUY
Just a witty book to introduce the foundations of molecular biology. Keeps you smiling while you learn. If you have to buy a book of this nature, then this is definitely the one to get. In fact, if I had enough money I'd buy you one, it's that good. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Could Save Your Life
I thought I had kept up with most of the major trends of discovery in the biological sciences. But this book explains research findings I haven't seen reported anywhere else. Some of these findings could save lives.
4-0 out of 5 stars Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters
As we enter the 21st century, the advances of science and genetics are increasingly becoming a part of our lives. In Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters, author Matt Ridley paints a compelling picture of the genetic "revolution" and what it means to society as a whole. The mapping of the human genome, according to him, was just the beginning of a greater process of discovery as society as a whole will change because of genomics. The structure of the book is unique in that each of the 23 chapters represents one of the human chromosomes; a gene on each chromosome is highlighted to give an overall theme to that chapter. Through this technique, Ridley gives the reader new insights into topics ranging from personality and intelligence to fate and the very origins of life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hugely Entertaining
This is one of the best written popular science books that I've come across - it reads more like a fiction novel than a science book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.
2-0 out of 5 stars Biomedical Engineering Student
...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for beginners and advanced students
This is a well written book with something for just about everyone. There are parts geared directly to engineers, but issues like foreign body response are dealt with rigorously enough for the best bio geek. All classes of implantable devices are covered with a healthy dose of historyto boot! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job
The book promised an intro to nanotechnology and that's what it delivered. A fairly nontechnical, but graphic representation of a new science. If someone wants a thourough education buy a textbook. If you want an intro into one of the most promising new fields without a 400 page manual, this is a good place to start. The previous reviewer is a moron. Read the cover before you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Next Big Idea
Great job organizing such sciency material in easy, yet educational format! Some of the best in the field recommended this read. The author's analogies and content are accurate. This book gives the reader a toolset of knowledge to expand on.Regardless of ones background, this technology is worth knowing about. With a background as a manufacturing engineer, I don't fit into the traditional chemistry and biology scene.I look at this area and see untraditional manufacturing processes that people need to know about. When these processes come out of research, and into the manufacturing sector there are going to be serious manufacturing challenges. This book has helped me solidify my interest within this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Author Review
Dan Ratner: A man with brains and one hot body! He's got it all! I have had the pleasure of meeting this young and "yummy" hunk after the release of his book. I must say, his photo in the book doesn't do him justice. Ladies, you really have to see this hunk in person! If you are ever in the Chicago area, I would seriously advise you to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, easy to read book
I am always extremely leary of biochemistry and/or bioconjugate books because if you're looking for a specific answer, you're not going to find it in a book.Instead, you have to bother those with experience and learn from their techniques.HOWEVER, this book is an exception in the highest regard!I was able to easily derive a surface chemistry protocol in around 10 minutes, and it only took me that long because I was fascinated on how direct this book was. Basically here's what you get:
4-0 out of 5 stars a good book in bioconjugate chemistry area
It is hard for a chemistry major student to switch to biochemistry area. When a chem student try to read the big biochemistry textbook, he will be dizzy because of so many reaction equations and biocircles. To his mostsurprise, those equations are quite different with what he learned inoriganic lecture. What shall he begin to go into the new world? 3-0 out of 5 stars Technically sound, but editoriallynot honest
As a biologist currently employed as Group Product Manager in a leading pharma/biotech company (top 5 worldwide), I'm interested in progressive developments of nanotechnology applications to medicine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A timely contribution to nanotechnology literature.
Once again Robert A. Freitas, Jr. has turned out a remarkable volume of information (similar to Nanomedicine Volume 1).It is probably useful to have read Nanomedicine Volume 1 before reading Volume IIA, but Volume IIA can be read on its own particularly if one has a biological or medical education. Its emphasis is on whether we can expect nanotechnology based devices to be able to operate within the human body but it also deals with whether or not certain aspects of nanotechnology might be dangerous to biological life in general.I thought the aspects of the book that identified the areas where we lack knowledge at this time to be particularly useful. They pointed out topics that still need to be researched. The book is excellent in suggesting solutions for problems we can anticipate at this time in the area of biocompatibility.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This book is a comprehensive introduction to the botany of economically important plants.Approximately half the book is devoted to food plants, with separate chapters for temperate fruits, tropical fruits, grains, legumes, and vegetables. In each of these chapters, a basic botanical description is provided for each major crop as well as snippets of information about this history or culture usage of the crop. The remainder of the book covers non-food uses of plants, with chapters devoted to spices, herbs, and perfumes; vegetable oils and waxes; hydrogels, latexes, and resins; medicinal plants; psychoactive drugs and poisons; stimulating beverages; alcoholic beverages; fibers, dyes, and tannins; wood, cork, and bamboo; ornamental plants; and economically important uses of algae. The text, especially in the later chapters, also explains how the plants are processed to form the finally product and includes numerous diagrams as well as pictures. The book includes suggested readings, a glossary, and an index, but it does not have study questions. The authors note that they saved money by not using any color photos, since they are so readily available on the Internet, but it would have been nice to point readers to specific sites to view such pictures if they so wished.5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Beautiful.
What might at first glance appear to be your basic botany book actually doubles as a beautiful "coffee table" book with the most splendid artwork you will ever see.Display it proudly. Use it wisely.Kudos mostespecially to M. Ogorzaly, her work is most impressive out of the bunch ofdistinguished collaborators! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply fascinating
The sheer number of books in the area of bioinformatics is growing rapidly, and each author takes a different approach to the topic: Bergeron's Bioinformatics Computing uses concepts from Information Theory, while Pervzner's Computational Molecular Biology uses Graph Theory and Durbin et. al. Biological Sequence Analysis use Statistics and hard core mathematical analysis to get the point across.Campbell and Heyer, the authors of Discovering Genomics, Proteomics, & Bioinformatics use concepts from Electrical Engineering and Control Engineering to prescribe some of the details of genomics and proteomics. As an instructor you need to choose the right book to meet the needs and understanding level of your target audience. For biology students that have little mathematics or statistics knowledge but have taken Physics II (E&M), this would be the perfect book. The authors are a little heaving on the biological terminologies, so a sophomore level Computer Science major with little or no biology background would have a difficult time coming up to speed at the beginning, but the glossary of terms at the end of the book is comprehensive enough that can aid the learning process.
4-0 out of 5 stars A novel approach!
Abstract: great and innovative book. I have seen many books, but none like this. It is still concise in this first edition, yet could become the "Lewin" of genomics.Read more
