4-0 out of 5 stars Almost the same as previous editions
This is a good technical book, but if you have any previous edition you will find that it is almost the same as the 13th edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pressure Vessel Bible
This book contains valuable data from many sources. The author stays focused on steel & welded vessels which I found refreshing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.Watch the formulas !
Excellent resource.Check "Properties of Sections" area.Check equation for finding value of "I" for a hollow rectangle.I found that the values of "h" and "k" were reversed. This can be a hard-to-find error with great consequences. I would like moreinformation on support lug design. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Insufficient detail to be of much use
The typesetting of this book makes it very difficult to read. It appears to be a scan of a typed page. In any event, although it does summarize some of the basics of medical device design such as design controls, the design file, submission of an IDE/510(k)/or PMA, it does not give enough detail to be of any use. The reader can get all of the information in this book from FDA guidance documents, which are free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent outline and overview
This little review and outline packs a lot of information into only about 130 pages. This means it makes for fairly dense reading given the technical level but it's obviously intended for the biochem or serious student. The book consists of 15 chapters ranging from 5 to 20 pages in length, depending on the subject. Key concepts or facts are emphasized and often highlighted in dark gray boxes throughout the text, and some chapters include solved problems. A sampling of the chapter titles includes Proteins; Lipids and Membranes; Enzyme Catalysis and Kinetics; Carhohydrate Metabolism; the Citric Acid Cycle; Nitrogen Metabolism; and Gene Expression and Protein Synthesis. 5-0 out of 5 stars essential MR lab companion
This book is essential to the library of any MR lab that has an interest in in vivo MR spectroscopy, especially on the basic science level. The beginner will find a good survey of the scope of topics currently under investigation in the basic science literature. The expert will find this book especially useful in its nuts-and-bolts approach, which translates topics from literature to scanner well. This book is less appropriate for physicians in that it does not present information relevant to today's clinical practice. This book was an invaluable reference throughout my PhD training. Because small-animal and vertical bore magnets frequently have less user-friendly instrumentation and packaged support programming than clinical scanners, a more hands-on understanding of basic in vivo MR and all its components is frequently required. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great MRI Book
I tried the green book but found it didn't cover the pulse sequence development to a depth that was acceptable to me.This books covers pulses in such a way that it's invaluable if you're developing or rewriting any MR sequences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of MRI pulse sequences is the best handbook I had ever used

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource on Biodiesel and other alt. fuels
Greg does a great job of explaining what biodiesel is, how/where it came about, and why it is a good additive to our current petrodiesel. He also writes about what other countries are doing with and how they are (currently) ahead of the US in utilizing it.He also discusses other forms of alternative/renewable sources of energy.I would recommend this book as good reading, but I would probably recommend 'Biodiesel America' first....as it has a bit more current info than Biodiesel: Growing A New Energy Economy. But good reading nontheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Biodiesel
Greg's book is a fine introduction to the concept of diesel biofuels and deserves its fivestar rating. He obviously believes that the advantages of cleaner emissions and potential for OPEC import reductions outweigh biodiesel's disadvantages.
2-0 out of 5 stars Biodiesel isn't a solution for energy.
Beeing unemployed, I'm an agronomist here in Brazil. Then I know very much about energy and fuel from crops.Compared to ethanol, the same area produces 7 times more fuel then to biodiesel. If you read in portuguese, you can read my own article about biodisel in site http://www.israel3.com/article341.html .

2-0 out of 5 stars Only an introduction to biomechanics
I am a grad student in biology who recently got interested in spider silk biomechanics. I was looking for a good book on biomechanics and my advisor suggested that I get this one. It was so disappointing !
5-0 out of 5 stars Best introductory physics textbook ever
This book would be a fantastic text for an introductory physics class, eg, mechanics classes aimed at future doctors. It begins with the "simple" problem of walking, which can be understood as an oscillation, with the frequency tuned to the length of your legs. From there, the book proceeds to dimensional analysis, and treats the biomechanical universe as a set of simple tubes, surfaces, flows, beams, and levers, all amenable to simple calculation and estimation. This book contains more real, relevant physics than any introductory physics text (with the possible exception of the Feynman lectures, which are totally unsuited for first-year students). It is the best physics textbook we know.(Review co-written by Dr Sanjoy Mahajan, Department of Physics, University of Cambridge).

5-0 out of 5 stars Offer from the author...
An accumulation of instructional materials to accompany the book will be sent as an e-mail attachment to anyone who contacts me at svogel@duke.edu--just tell me a little about who you are.The files (Word and PDF) are freely usable for anything except remunerative republication. If you are using the book in a course and wish to limit local dissemination (I supply answers to the problem sets), tell me and I'll do my best to comply. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Biological Sequence Analysis
This is a very good book.I got it for a class and it is very helpful and insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly an Excellent Book
I will agree and submit: this is an invaluable introduction to the field of bioinformatics. With introductions to everything from sequence analysis to hidden markov models and even a primer on grammars, this is a useful introduction both to biological applications for computer scientists *as well as* computational methods for biologists.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book ... a little boring to read ...
I bought "Biological Sequence Analysis" for my introductory bioinformatics course. AS the course covers almost everything mentioned in the book I have (almost) finished reading and studying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction
... not only to molecular modeling, but to some of the subtleties of DNA and protein behavior and geometry, too.5-0 out of 5 stars A long expected book in molecular modeling is finally here
I highly recommend Professor T. Schlick's book. It is beautifully written with many examples and great illustrations. The book is truly interdisciplinary; it covers, in good depth, both the biological and mathematical aspects of computational structural biology. Most chapters start with an amenable introduction and finish with "hands-on" recommendations and future challenges. I was particularly pleased with the level of detail in each chapter (in particular those that show the reader the advantages and pitfalls of the different methods presented). My colleague Mariel Vazquez and I used this book in the design and preparation of our "Special topics in Mathematics" course at the UC Berkeley Mathematics Department during the Spring of 2003. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written!
As a person with no expertise in molecular modeling who wanted to learn about this field, this book is right on!I find the author's lively text to be as well-written and clear as any science textbook I have ever read.I especially enjoyed the first two chapters for their historical perspective and their practical illustrations of applications of genetics in the world today. These chapters can be understood by non-scientists, whereas the rest of the book is clearly designed for graduate students in any one of the science disciplines.Read more
