2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information, but not-so-well explained...
With an undergrad degree in chemistry and a year of graduate school (granted, without a focus solely in biochemistry), this text was often difficult for me to follow and gain much from.Though the text contained an impressive breadth of topics, this breadth came at the cost of depth. In my opinion, a textbook should more-or-less stand on its own in providing a clear understanding of a topic. All too often I didn't find this to be the case with the Fersht book.Instead, I often had to consult many of the references listed in the text to obtain sufficient understanding of topics.(Fortunately, the book includes extensive reference lists.)If looking up endless references (many old and sometimes difficult to obtain) is something you enjoy, this book is for you.--If not, forget it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A complete and valuable tool
A comprehensive review of this book appears in the March-April 2002 issue of "Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology", Vol. 36, No. 2, p. 141.The book is an important part of a library for anyone engaged in technologies or products dependent on sterilization or disinfection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is so funny
Check out what that kid wrote on October 25, 1999. He gave the book one star. Someone find him and tell him how much of an idiot he is.He wrote the dumbest thing I have ever seen.Who the hell reads Perry's cover to cover. Is he really that dumb just go buy a book about making bombs if you want to "make bombs".Another thing any normal person would realize after the first million pages is that Chemical Engineers don't learn how to make bombs.what a retard.Oh yeah, good book

4-0 out of 5 stars Good service
I got the book in a very short time and the process was also quick. 2 years ago, I had a problem with an Amazon affiliated store and took me such a long time to get my money refunded but this time, Amazon did a great job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great text for those seeking to become a scientist.
The negative aspects that many reviewers seem to leverage against this book are the same aspects I find most useful and that make this text standout. This is an excellent text, written to help develop not merely an understanding of the subject material, but more broadly, to understand how to approach things like a scientist.I bought this book for a Euk MolBio undergraduate course which was taught roughly half from this book, and half from primary literature, and found the approach excellent in helping to improve the accessibility of any scientific paper, in addition to improving my own experimental design abilities. There are many useful diagrams presented, and a plethora of primary experimental findings that form the backbone of our current knowledge base. This book highlights the seminal experiments and thought processes that molded the field of molecular biology into what we know today.A must have, and an invaluable resource that will help the burgeoning, early scientist take one step closer to their future career of scientific independence and innovation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to Understand and too much experimental data
I used this textbook for an undergraduate capstone class in molecular biology. The book is divided into eight main parts: Introduction, Methods in Molecular Biology, Transcription in Prokaryotes, Transcription in Eukaryotes, Posttranscriptional Events, Translation, and Genomes. The book is very detailed in its explanations of molecular processes and this makes it difficult to comprehend.Often, I would read a few pages and understand very little of what I read.I found that I learned more if I listened closely in class and only refered to the book for details, which is what I would suggest. Also my class focused mostly on problem based learning in molecular biology and less on memorizing molecular details. This book contains very few problems so my professor made up his own questions that he gave us and they were more helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars statsitical genetics
There are many basic errors in statistics in this book, such as the concepts of expected value and degrees of freedom. The statistical background of the author should be very weak. From the bibliography (how many publications does the author have?) we can see whether the author is well prepared to write this kind of book.Did Dr. Ron Sederoff who wrote the foreword read the book thoroughly? If so, he should have pointed out those very obvious errors. Of course, Dr. Sederoff should not be responsible for those errors if he has no background in Statistics. I hope the author can check the book thoroughly before it goes to the fourth printing or just withdraw it from the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful job
The author of this book defines genomics as the study of whole genomes via the integration of cytology, Mendelian-quantitative-population-molecular genetics with bioinformatics and automated sequencing. It attempts to answer, the author states, such questions as to the physical and chemical requirements of genomes, the possible necessity that genes be located at certain sites to function normally, that particular DNA sequences and structures needed for gene functions, the total number of functional genes necessary for a biological system, and the homology between the DNA sequences of different species. He addresses the book to biologists interested in statistical issues in genomics, for mathematicians in genomics, and for students of genetics. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in Molecular Quantitative Genetics
The book discuses quantitative and population genetics on the bases of molecular level. It is very useful for genetic analysis across many disciplines, including plant and animal breeding, and human genetics. It provides useful explanations of some complex biometrical concepts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alien among us
Hans Rudi Giger, a direct descendant of Hieronymus Bosch, H.P. Lovecraft and Salvador Dali, is a unique artist whose works depict cosmological visions and nightmarish dream-state revelations. As you leaf through the glorious illustrations in 'H.R. Giger's Biomechanics', you begin to realize that it takes a deviant personality to create deviant art of this caliber. The kind of paintings on display here are something nobody could conceive without total 24/7 commitment to unleashing the subconscious for all the world to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text
This is an excellent introduction to Bioinformatics. It does assume some very basic knowledge of biology- perhaps a couple of paragraphs could help the total newbies.
5-0 out of 5 stars great beginner
In spite of the title (I don't know many dummies interested in multiple sequence alignments) this reference is written by experts in the field of bioinformatics and is very accessable for the beginner.I purchased this book as a beginning graduate student so that I could learn which programs to use to compare amino acid and nucleic acid sequences as well as prepare them for publication and this book was perfect for this end. This text doesn't delve into the algorithms or much theory (which is learned through practice and other sources), nevertheless, I recommend this for the researcher for a crash course or quick reference. This book really helped me get my feet wet in this area (and recently publish a nice alignment) and will certainly reduce my workload next semester for my bioinformatics course!

3-0 out of 5 stars misleading title ....
The tile might be misleading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat more than an out-of-date catalog of tools
The book is a collection of chapters by different authors addressing software tools for various problems: database search, multiple sequence alignment, gene prediction, protein structure prediction, etc.A big flaw is that all of the authors assume a different level of prior background and have rather different emphases.4-0 out of 5 stars A survey for tool users

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent kinetics book
If you are thinking of purchasing a book on receptor-ligand kinetics, this is a wise choice. It is easy to follow and advanced enough for most graduate work in biochemical and biomedical engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the modern biologist
This book will surely be thought of as the first structured presentation of principles of modern systems biology. This book introduces the application of Chemical Engineering to biologists and molecular biology and pharmacology of receptors to Chemical Engineers. The top-down picture of coupled processes is not only new to biologists but introduces a whole new way to look at biological problems. Especially the chapter which has cell migration explained introduces one to multi-dimensional thinking: cell mechanics, biochemistry, kinetic modeling and molecular biology all in the same problem. This may seem mystical to many. Would probably be read more by Engineers than biologists, who are yet to take the leap in thought to multi-dimensional science. This book would be remembered after many years to be a pioneer in the new science of systems biology, although it was written much before the Human Genome Project. Systems thinking and Chemical Engineering has been much beneficial in solving some very important biomedical problems like Drug Delivery(Robert Langer), Tumor Biology(Rakesh Jain) and Tissue Engineering(Robert Langer et.al.). Lauffenburger's work would be counted among these shining lights when these methods and tools bear fruit sooner than later.(Lauffenburger has already provided a glimpse of success of this approach when he worked with Amgen to produce a much pharmacokinetically improved biologic using physiologically based pharmacokinetic model coupled with cellular modeling of receptor-ligand trafficking and binding model)Nature,5 August 2002.Lauffenburger and Linderman are geniuses seeking support for "return to science" for biology. ...
