Finally, a book that lives up to it's advertising. Every page is interesting in this voluminous 600 page masterwork. No long boring company histories and endless pictures of people here. Ludvigsen stays on subject with clear modern pictures and expert analysis from makers and users of such engines. There is not one weak point in the whole thing, I feel I got much more than I paid for with this great book.

A truly excellent work for those enchanted by the fine detail of technology. A myriad of fine drawings and half tones backed up by colour plates of the V12's birth and development through the century. Karl's fluid and emminently readable style maintains interest with pithy anecdotes like Henry Ford's reason for sticking with 4 cylinders rather than 6: "A car should have no more cylinders than a cow has teats". From 1.5 litres to 27 litres the V12 story is always absorbing.

The author is British plain and simple, and it show with whimsical sayings like 'monkey motion' and the like. Outstanding historical documentation, but the author overwhelms with minutiae like bore and stroke for every engine, and which cylinder bank is staggered forward.

This is a great book. It is a book you can read through, it reads better than any other text book I have read. It is not like most physics text books. If you are looking for just formulas and problems to plug and chug you need to look somewhere else, this is a far deeper book than that. This is for people that actually want a solid backbone in physics learn the how and why, understand the concepts.The problems in this volume can be pretty difficult, but the information to solve them are in the chapter, The book makes you think for your self. The questoins are structured so you can not memorize problem types and the equations to plug and chug, they test understanding. The result of this approch is you are far better positioned to handle physics problems that you have never seen before, where people that just want plug and chug fall apart on problems they have never seen.5-0 out of 5 stars the only truly innovative intro physics text available
I've used this text for my calculus-based intro physics course since before it was officially available (since fall 1999). There is no other text like it. The emphases on estimation, programming, and real world problems (as opposed to sanitized plug and chug problems) make for a VERY different experience for students and instructors alike. In my opinion, the highlight of Volume I is the treatment of energy concepts in chapters 4-6. No other text is as meticulous with terminology as this one. Instructors will have to rethink what and how they were first taught about this material. Volume I culminates in showing how mechanics and thermodynamics are united via statistical mechanics, and the approach is extraordinary. Students using this text will be better prepared for future courses than their peers who use the traditional texts; there is research to back this up. The authors provide unrivaled user support too.

The book covers dynamics of ground vehicles over hard surfaces and unprepared terrain - mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions, terramechanics. Tracked vehicles such as a military tank or a bulldozer that is propelled by tracks instead of pneumatic tires are also covered in detail in this book. There is also attention to air-cushion vehicles (hovercrafts). However, the guided ground vehicles which are constrained to move along a fixed path, such as railway vehicles and tracked levitated vehicles are not covered in this book.

I have always been able to fix electrical problems on cars but sometimes at much wasted expense and effort.Tracy Martin's book is simply the best book I have ever read on this subject.It is a "nuts and bolts" book that tells you why and how to test a certain way.Suddenly automotive electrical systems make sense to me.This book will save much wasted effort.My father was an electrical engineer and he figured out electrical problems for me.When he died I had to figure this stuff out for myself and I wish I had paid more attention.Tracy Martins book is great, not only do I recommend it ... if Tracy Martin ever writes another one I will buy that too.Fred Rawls

How do I dislike thee? Let me count the ways ...1-0 out of 5 stars Very Bad Book for Ordinary Car User.
My level: a Berkeley Graduate Student(IQ not bad), NEVER repair car before. I need to turn up the "idle speed" of my 88 Corolla, so go to book store to browse this book. 1. the book print in Black and White, autual photos are really in bad quality: especially for the engine parts: half of one picture is black, How the user tell what is what!! 2. for the drawing pictures only focus in detail parts, Not show where this part locate! If I can not locate the part, how can I adjust the parts, let along disassemble and asssemble! 3. To help myself, I find "Tercel" and "Camery" Repair Manual of the "Chilton's" to take a look, but all these books are the same layout, printing quality and illustration. So Do Not help at all. 4. They should offer a Master Map of the Engine System, Then divide the Master Map into several subpart by engine functions, then go even detail of each parts, but the book is not!! 5. As for my own experience of use this book: I assembles "TAMIYA Plastic Model - motorcycle, WWII Tank", I have to use the "graphic identification" skill of my eyes, try to guess and locate the engine parts from different chapters of the book, and combine the illustration together and final find out "idle mixture adjust screw" ONLY ONE SCREW! NEDDLE IN HAY! under the "Carburetor" use total 3-4 hours. 6. I keep notes and Not buy the book from bookstore. 7. If you are novice of the car, go to B&N or Boulders take a look of the book by yourself, it is waste of money!

I own both the Haynes and the Chilton books. I need one to fill in the blanks left by the other. If I had to use just one, it would probably be the Haynes. The Chilton would still be fine for most shadetree work. Neither have complete or even adequate wiring diagrams or in-depth info for transmissions,A/C,or troubleshooting. I bought this book because I am nuts about cars, but in addition to that, I am also a professional in a technical field. I used this book as a reference during the writing of my doctoral thesis. I found that the Bosch Automotive Handbook had a very comprehensive section on hardness testing, which I used extensively in my research at that time.I am also using this book in calculating the suspension geometry for a car project at home - I use it at work so much that I'm considering the purchase of a second copy for home use.

If you are an automotive engineer then you know this book and probably have an edition.As to the idea that it is "Theoretical", nothing could be further from the truth, it contains a number of relevant charts and descriptions, for instance and handy guide to the properties of liquid fuels which contains ignition temperatures, stoichometry, ignition limits and the like.Of course, if you are not an engineer, than it is pretty well not applicable.It is NOT a guide to repair of vehicles.It is NOT detailed.It is NOT intended for an audience outside engineer/technicians and automotive managers.It does contain rather a lot of basic information, for instance, descriptions of how a catalytic converter works, or how an O2 sensor works.

No matter what you want to do with the Ford EEC-IV computer (88-93) this is the book for you.This is a very indepth book that dosent just tell you how to do somthing but it also shows you why it does what it does and why it will do somthing else if you mess with it.He explains how everything works, from the sensors to the computer and then to the acutators, he explains how the work together and he writes very clearly so it is easy to understand and to put into action.

If you have questions, or just need a very good understanding of the Ford EEC-IV Fuel Injection systems, this is the book for you. Don't waste your time or money on any other book. This one explains theory, real life problems, and the methods for tracking down a malfunction and correcting it. Also includes what is the best way to go about improving performance, and making the system adapt to performance improvements.

I found the Hains to be helpful in the basic needs of a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 owner, but if you are looking for a book that will give more indepth information, such as restoration jobs, I do not recomend this book.For example this booksdigrams and schematics are much to be desired andblurry at best.In addition,job descriptions are sometimes missing keysteps. Check it for your self before you by it!!!

I find that this book is often the the book that I want to go to first for information about servicing Land Cruisers.The Original Toyota manuals are more thorough but they are not organized in a fashion that I like as muchas this book by Haynes. This book has a very good collection of wiringschematics for vehicles produced between 1968 and 1982. Torquespecifications are liberally included throughout the book and I feel thatmost of the critical torque settings are included.The cutaway drawing onthe cover is of a 1975ish vintage FJ40 and is very well executed.Thisbook is much more thorough than the Haynes manual for the 60-series and80-series Land Cruisers.Forexample the 60/80-series Haynes book basicallysays about the gearboxes that you should take them to a mechanic forservicing. This book covers servicing all parts of the drivetrain. Theunfortunate things about this book are: 1.it covers only the F and 2Fpetrol engines and does not cover any of the diesel engines 2.it does notcover any of the pre-1968 Land Cruiser models: some of which are veryinteresting and most of which are very difficult to obtain good servicedocumentation about.This book is well worth owning and I think that it isa better Service Manual than most of the other books about Land Cruisers ofthis vintage. ... Really, I was very excited when I got the book, after trying repair my car few times, I notice the book was good for nothing. As an example I can tell that not even the position of timing belt marks on the gears are explained.

The person who buys this book thinks it is good for ALL Suzuki Swifts.......that's not true. I own a Suzuki Swift Gti 1.3 4 cylinder DOHC, and this book tells almost NOTHING about it, just some references here and there, it may be good for a 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder Swift (although I doubt it)....money thrown to the waste basket!

I wrote my first review 5 months ago.During that time I have gotten 5 emails- about one every month or so asking "How do you rate this book?"I've had 5 months to rely on this book- and its saved me 400 bucks.Someone sent me an email quesiton to me tonight and I delted it by accident (I'm on my laptop and it just got connected to the net ok?) and so I'm writing here to help out the guy who emailed me with a quesiton about a 1994 Swift 1.3 liter Lsi.Yes you need this book- you just don't know that yet.The rest of you- yes, if you have a suzuki you need this book.
