4-0 out of 5 stars The ideal engine rebuilders book at a bargain price.
After I had read both books on Nissan engines by this author I bought this book too. This book is set out so you can diagnose faults first to determine if you need to rebuild or not. Then it goes into engine teardown in detail. It describes the rebuilding process. The cylinder heads are covered in a separate chapter which the author explains.
4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes it helps to just read the instructions.
Having built several motors for my cars and helping a few friends (each) build a few motors, it was good to just solidify what I knew, and double check those "I thought so" things. I mean you won't learn 20 years worth of experience from any book, but this one is well written and kinda lets you know when you are leaving some horses out on the bench.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but I'd like an update and correction
Unlike some reviewers who would like to see Brandt describe and bless novel spoking patterns, I concur with his recommendation of traditional spoking. The traditional tangent tension-spoked wheel is one of the most elegant and efficient structures ever devised. A wheelbuilder may choose a rim, hub and spokes at will and so, construct wheels of many kinds that are not available commercially. With skill and care, an amateur may build wheels of professional quality. The traditional wheel may be built to the desired degree of ruggedness vs. weight, and if damaged, can often be made usable with an emergency repair or adjustment.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible
Jobst Brandt may be an extremely cranky on-line persona, but this book is the best guide to how bicycle wheels work. The section on theory is clear and easy to read. I was able to lace, true and ride a wheel based on the instructions found here.

4-0 out of 5 stars The wheel building bible
Without a doubt, this is the accepted resource for wheel builders.I think the book is a well-written information source for the new and experienced builder. If you want to know how wheels work, this book is for you.The engineering explanations are useful and detailed. Some feel the author is a little old fashioned in his view point on new products and wheel design. That viewpoint is implied in a few places in the book, but I don't feel it is over emphasized. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Residential Wiring
This is a great textbook for the beginning and intermediate level electricians. The text stays detailed yet organized as you follow steps in the process of wiring a typical house. It is based on the 2002 NEC so everything is updated and to code. The study questions, and chapter end summaries are key features that will aid in the learning process. I believe this book is a great bridge from classroom study to on-the-job training.I will use this book and would highly recommend it to others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Favs
It is everything and more than I expected to find in a Mercedes tome. Having read several books on the subject I find this one to be the most informative. The early years are covered well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Exquisite
This book is a joy to have. Well written and beautifully illustrated, I found this book a pleasure to own. As a dedicated Benz owner, I can appreciate the attention to detail that exists in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost as heavy as the car!
The amount of factual material lavished in this tome about the origins of the motor car and the search for excellence via the Mercedes Benz brand should keep the afficianado glued for hours. The pictures are also excellent.Written in about three or four languages within the same book, the descriptions are backed by photographs - good ones charting the evolution of the Merc from the 19th century right to the modern sleek saloon.I think this is very much for the Mercedes buff or collector and I bought it as a gift.I think this book would be good if it showed how the Merc could grow some wings and start being more in harmony with the Earth's environment based on what sort of fuel it burns and fuel efficiency rather than just talk about technical specifications in self congratulatory terms.Still this book is about "man's" achievement with the motor car and there are things in this which you could admire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gift
I bought "The Cobra in the Barn" book for my husband. He loves it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Coffee Table Book
Good book for the waiting room of an upscale independent auto repair shop or the "reading room" in you own home; i.e. circumstances where you don't expect to read a book cover to cover. Some of the vignettes are very well written. Some are not.The latter fact is more noticeable because they all have the same story line.Several of those near the end of the book immerse the reader in minutiae about a particular car's history that only that car's owner could possibly care about.Overall, I enjoyed the portions I read, but will pass it on to a friend confident that he will do the same when he's finished with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, light read for a car guy like me
I have scouted, searched, and on occasion bought an old car that has been sitting somewhere without a "for sale" sign on it. This book reads like the journal I'd like to write. The cars and their circumstances are mostly unique situations, and the lost/found and long term pursuit angles are the best. For the most part the buyers have a genuine interest, if not a personal one, in the cars they seek.Thankfully, the megabucks trophy collectors and hoarders who fill their warehouses (and ruin it for most everyone else) don't dominate the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars the textbook on Bosch fuel injection
Written as a textbook and how-to. Good illustrations.Best when used with the Bosch factory manual

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I bought this book as a companion to my VW Vanagon book.Since I was new to fuel injection, and the Vanagon book had little/no troubleshooting information, I was completely stumped with fuel injection/ignition problems after a major overhaul of my '85 waterboxer engine. The Bosch book was a life saver. Not only did I (quickly) get my engine running, but I now understand how the whole thing works.Even for people who don't have Bosch systems and want to learn how fuel injection works, this is a good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but...
This is an excellent book detailing the theory of operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Bosch fuel injection systems. It covers in great detail all models of the Bosch systems. The modifing and tuning chapter is a bit lacking, though. It gives you some ideas about how to modify the system, but doesn't go into very much detail. The part I was most looking forward to reading about was recalibrating the air flow meter. The book only had three paragraphs on recalibration and didn't even touch on how to do it. Oh well, there is always the internet... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
Book itself is very informative, however there is a problem with representation of it being passed off as "new". First copy came without a dust jacket, hard cover had corner bumps and scuffs. Replacement copy came the exact same way, in the same condition and without the DJ. Cost of book is $50.00 NEW, had we wanted the book in used condition without the original DJ, we would have ordered it as such. The minimal refund Amazon offered was not to our satisfaction and the reps and/or management are too busy to make personal contact with their business customers. There appears to be an internal problem with receiving/quality inspection of their supplier's goods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, interesting book
Yes, I have also read Diesel's Engine by Lyle Cummins, the youngest son of Clessie Cummins, the co-founder of Cummins Engine. If, in reading DE, I am a proven crazy person, then I am, so discount what I say next.If one is fascinated by diesel engines, then this is a "must read."I have not completed the book yet, but having read 300 or so pages and I must say there is much beyond the engines. If you are a Harvard Business Review type, this will have much for you about entrepreneurism, the family business, enterprise capitalization, growth, corporate strategy, the inventor and his role in a technology driven business, timliness, single business small town employers, transportation trends, product quality, employee relations and more. I like reading about successes, but feel like this book portrays an almost charmed life of something impossible to duplicate. If every corporation were as successful as Cummins is portrayed, then we would reach corporate nirvana. Can what has been written here be true?Buy the book, write your own review, and we'll see what you think. ... i want to see where the starter is located on the 1989 toyota camr

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible choice!!!!!! I'll try to return it!!!!
One star is way too much for this book. I got the newest version three days ago and it was like getting a repair manual for a toy. I've got a Camry 91 with a v6 engine and this book had virtually nothing I could use.Not even a decent set of diagrams and instructions to replace the sparkplugs...!!!! Forget about anything else like a CV boot replacement or atiming belt replacement. I hope the publisher sees my review.

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL! Do not buy this book!!!!!!
This must be the most useless book I have every seen on auto maintenance and repair. If you're looking for any info on your Camry, look elsewhere. Due to the nature of the book (13 years of camry), you will not find *ANY*specifics on your particular model. No part numbers listed anywhere in themanual. Diagrams are ambiguous at best. Instructions read like they werepulled from a high school auto shop manual. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive text for simulation of four-stroke engines.
As a relatively new designer of the four-stroke-cycle engine, Design and Simulation of Four-Stroke Engines is by far the most important single source of information to me.I also own Blair's Design and Simulation ofTwo-Stroke Engines. This book covers four-stroke engines with the sameblend of sophisticated full thermodynamic cycle modeling and empiricalinsight. An introductory chapter enlightens the reader to the geometry ofthe four-stroke engine, defines terminology as it will be found insubsequent chapters and reviews thermodynamic theory as it will be appliedto the computer model.Chapter 2, as in Design and Simulation ofTwo-Stroke Engines, lays the ground work for the heart of the computermodel, the prediction of unsteady gas flow through engine ducting.A morecomplete explanation of a one dimensional method for the prediction ofunsteady, compressible flow through engine ducting simply cannot be found. The following chapter is dedicated to the definition andmeasurement of an"actual" coefficient of discharge for poppet valve systems andwhy they are critically important to the model as compared with the moretraditional ideal or isentropic coefficients of discharge.Chapter 4explains the theory for the 2-zone burn model for combustion in thecylinder while providing insight into the proper design and geometry of thecombustion chamber.Throughout the book, the focus is on thenaturally-aspirated four-stroke engine, however, where applicableinformation is given on turbocharging and direct and in-direct dieselcombustion. One of the most important chapters to the actual user of thecomputer model is Chapter 5.I have used Prof. Blair's software intwo-stroke and four-stroke versions for the Mac and now use Optimum Power'sofferings for the IBM compatible. No less than 6 different engines areanalyzed using the simulation ranging from a string trimmer to a motorcycleto a turbo-diesel automobile. All the relevant data is given to create thegeometry in the model. As each engine is discussed, the strengths of theparticular design are pointed out and explained via the pressure wavediagrams created by the model itself. All these engines display very goodcorrelation with actual measurements even though they vary in output from 1kW to 525 kW.In addition to the geometric data for these engines, thecombustion input parameters for the model are also given which are fromactual running engines. Therefore, one could take this combustioninformation and apply it to a similar model with good confidence that thisis close to reality. In order to reduce the design cycle time, Blair hasincluded an entire chapter on empirical approaches to design geometry thatare intended to be good starting points for input into the model.I findthe intake tract tuned length program and the poppet valve time-areaprogram the most useful.A final chapter is devoted to the current stateof the design methodology for intake and exhaust silencing systems and howthe thermodynamics from Chapter 2 are now being implemented to predictsilencer performance. In conclusion, Design and Simulation of Four-StrokeEnginesis a highly recommended read for anyone involved in the design ortuning of four-stroke engines and a must for anyone involved in thethermodynamic modeling of these engines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Design and Simulation of Four-Stroke Engines
This extensive new work by Professor Blair on four-stroke engine design is a welcome addition to his previously published treatises on two-stroke engines. Coverage of material spans basic ideas of unsteady gas flow, tothe detailed analysis of single and muticylinder engine configurationsusing a state-of-the-art computer code. One of the highlights of the bookfrom my own perspective is the author's coverage of engines with historicalsignificance. The new insight gained from detailed analysis of theiroperating behavior using the computer code gives one a much greaterappreciation of the intricacies of efficient engine design. This book willbe a valuable asset to teacher and and student alike, by providing a broadrange of relevant subject matter in a single volume. I highly recommendthis excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most complete information source of 4-stroke design to date
The most complete and straightforward four-stroke text to date. This book is a must have for any serious engine designers library.Filled with many gems of wisdom, insight, and direct calculations relating to four-strokeengine design as well as historical background in engine design..The bookis so packed with information that numerous readings may be necessary tograsp all that Blair has to offer.Design examples abound from the topengine designers in the world (although anonymity is required). Theprofessor has done an exemplary job in assimilating the results to find thecommon thread among the great current and past engine designers. A goodreview of thermodynamics for the past and present college students and agood stating place to those without college thermodynamics. The heart ofthe book is wave dynamics in the engine design process, both in theory andapplication. Finally for those that must silence the music of the 4-strokethere is a section on muffler design. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Reference!!
This book is chock full of errors. I don't have any faith in the contents of this book. Color codes of wires are incorrect in troubleshooting areas, and there is poor coverage of all model years, especially newer ones. The book tells you what fault codes are but it does not tell you how to access them. I own two Hondas and I end up using the internet to get the information this book, more often than not, neglects to include. Purchase at your own risk -- it's too bad that it is the only book on the market for many Honda models.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than Hays
This is a fair book. Deffinatly better than Hays. Where hays explanes things in one sentence Chilton uses an entire paragraph. However it does not contain all the diagnosis I wanted and it is plagued with misprints andoccasionaly contridicts itself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor graphics, lack of detail, poor coverage of all models.
This was disappointing. The "Total Car Care" repair manual had non-detailed drawings instead of photos leaving you with only a vague idea of where the part that you are looking for is in relation to the rest ofyour car.The text was about as good as the graphics... it could have beenmore detailed and/or descriptive.Another probelm was that the graphicsgave only a single example of the procedure being described (as shown forthe '84-'87 CRX... not very helpful to orient you to a 95 Civic).Comparedto the other manuals that I have seen (Haynes and Clymer mostly) this oneleft alot to be desired at about twice the price. This one will give you aballpark idea of what you will need to do to fix your Honda, but I wouldconsider purchasing a single-model specific repair manual at a cheaperprice. ... I am a professional mechanic so I work on my own vehicles, to save some money over buying the repair manuals offered by Dodge I decided to purchase this manual for a rear anti-lock brake problem I'm having. When I found the correct section of the book,I thought that I had it made, the codes were there, pictures of the componets were there, great, I thought. So I began reading the text on obtaining trouble codes to isolate my vehicles problem. It tells you how to get the codes by shorting the diagnostic terminal to ground then read the codes on the ABS light on the dash, cool! Where's the connector? And which terminals at the connector once you find it!!! No pictures or descriptions of where this connector is located what it looks like or how many wires it contains. So thought I'd go to the wiring diagrams and at least find the terminal numbers or wire color codes to the ABS computer maybe that will help, NOT! All the wiring diagram shows is the feed wire from the engine computer to the ABS computer with a block that says "to ABS computer"! Not even a diagram of the ABS system! Not much help!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
The book I was looking for years ago as a Toyota Atlantic mechanic,... not too technical but with plenty to think about. Plus it's from SAE. I wish it had a longer aero treatment 'tho (but that's just where my interests lie) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff!
Much better than the Hayes repair manual that doesn't even show the 1995 trough 1998 models on the cover.Chilton has always been my favorite repair manual. It's a drag that they seem to be so hard to find these days at the local auto parts store. This manual covers everything from normal maintenance to engine overhaul and all that falls in between.A must-have for the do-it-yourself people at any level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works
Work fine, Lacks part numbers for replacement pieces and such, little odd to follow at places unless you really know your car.

3-0 out of 5 stars idiot's guide to eclipse repair
This book is simple if you don't know a socket wrench from a regular wrench, but when you need details to make the repair you just did not need a professional mechanic later, chilton's lacks. usefullness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumb up!!!
Hi!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Creates an excellent foundation.
An excellent book for learning about fiberglass/composites. Before reading this book, I had little knowledge about composties, but a desire to learn. The information is presented in a way that anyone can understand it. Aird educates the reader about different fiber types and weaves, resins and resin systems, gel coat, trade tools, safety, and basic lay-up. He also includes information on molds, plugs, and strength/stress -- though I feel these sections make having some hands-on knowledge of composites an asset, which I lack. It is an excellent book that can take you from knowing nothing, to a point where you can talk intelligently about composites with someone in the FRP field. As other reviews have pointed out, this is not a step by step manual; but is probably a prerequisite to actually understanding one. In conclusion: I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about fiberglass and composite systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the price
I had an interest in getting into Fiberglassing, so i bought this book.As most of the other people who reviewed this book said, it's not a step by step manual, but it offers a very good overview.Good enough that i ended up buying a second copy for a friend. If you have an interest, i would recommend this book. It's worth the price. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not for designers
The book covers many interesting topics, but rather superficially. It tells you about the various aspects related to design of automatic machinery, but not enough about anything so that you can actually apply it in designing machinery.Even the case studies do not get to technical details and are mainly descriptive.
