5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book, very easy to follow
This book is very easy to use.all the chapters are well written and very easy to follow. If you want a book that covers heat transfer that is great for a class or great for reference then this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Libro muy útil
5-0 out of 5 stars The book is so good you can teach yourself
This textbook is one of the best I've ever used.Incropera and DeWitt do a great job of explaining convection, conduction, and radiation.I have heard that the mass transfer portion of the book is lacking however, I am an ME major so its not an issue. The covering of conduction is especially good, it goes into great detail math wise although its well presented so you don't have to be a mathematical wizard to follow along. The book goes into a little bit of heat exchanger design, not very much but its a good introduction. If your instructor requires this book for your heat transfer class consider yourself very fortunate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to be self-study book
This book is really amazing, gives good examples and alot of questions. It is easy to follow, but it hasn't the whole math of many derivations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to understand the physics if life?Need to read this!
The topic of this book, the physical chemistry of molecules, especially those relevant to biology, is one of the mostchallenging courses to a college student in chemist. But these authors have tried to make it easy for you - and they succeed. They used figures, pictures and analogies to help you to understand some of the most sophisticated concepts in science. For example entropy. The authors are leading researchers in the field and they brought a unique perspective to the subject; the writing is very lucid. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thermal Fluid book
shipped in a very reasonable time, was in good condition, price was very fair. Great value

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning the FUNDAMENTALS.
I thought this was a very well written, organized book. The concepts were explained very clearly. It was great to finally find an understandable book on this subject; other thermo/fluids books that I have read haven't been as informative and comprehendable.2-0 out of 5 stars A couple of comments
I will begin with the good things. This book contains a LOT of information. The tables are very extensive, and the subject matter is very broad. The derivations are generally easy to follow and I found the text itself even enjoyable to read at times. These things upped my opinion of the book from one star to two. However, the example problems are generally not sufficient to help with the far more complex problems in the back of the chapters. As a further frustration, only about a sixth of the problems include the solutions. The end result is that for a homework one is left leafing through the book in a futile search for more extensive guidance on the very extensive problems, all the while not knowing if you didn't mess up the problem already in the first calculation you made. For example, I have this textbook for my second course in fluid dynamics. For my first homework, I had a three day weekend to complete 3 problems. 30+ work hours later (and one shot weekend) I have no idea if I'm right on the first one and I'm still stuck on the last one. I dislike having to go to reciation, so it's not unusual for me to spend lots of time on problems and reading the book in order to figure out the homeworks on my own. But this book is quite frankly kicking my arse. Considering that this is my second fluids course (I'm an aerospace eng student) you would think I would be better at fluids. However, my first fluids textbook was also a Cengel book, and that book was next to useless as well. My overall conclusion: A great book for reading and catching derivations with lots of good tables and a wide array of topics. But it's a huge frustration waiting to happen if you plan on working the problems/preparing for an exam. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable but Annoying
This text is a fairly standard treatment of classical (macroscopic) thermodynamics. It is targeted specifically at students of mechanical engineering. Anyone going into some other engineering discipline that depends on thermo (e.g., chem eng) -- or into one of the hard sciences (physics, biophys, biochem, chemistry, etc.) -- will get very little value from this book. Its main focus seems to be on the use of the right formula to solve specific kinds of problems. ("Plug and chug.") 3-0 out of 5 stars so far
So far this book is pretty good, but it needs more examples and a short study guide with conversion problems would be helpful. Some of the homework problems really take some time and creative unit changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cengel's 5th edition 2006 surpasses Moran/Shapiro. Definitely, no doubt!
Professor Cengel never ceases to update his series of premium McGraw-Hill Higher Education mechanical engineering textbooks. His flagship, the thermodynamics text - not yet a classic but already a standard and a universum's bestseller for the past 15 years - has become even more modernized and tightly integrated with nowadays media: electronic media (packaged with a free DVD-ROM instead of the CD-ROM), software, and online companion resources. Total professionalism throughout the entire package, a true aeuvre: hats off with regard to the accomplishment on both author's, editor's and publisher's part!

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT....
ITS GOOD BUTIT JUMP TO MUCH STEPS. I RECOMMEND "THERMODYNAMICS AN ENGINEERING APPROACH" FORM CENGEL AND BOLES. ITS MORE FRIENDLY USER. I HAVE BOTH

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but Too Much
This is an excellent text book as well as reference book for thermodynamics. If an undergraduate purchases it there will be many sections that will not be needed in the undergraduate course. If the authors could have produced a smaller volume directed to undergraduates only, that would be useful and more affordable. On the other hand, students who go on for graduate studies in thermal areas will find it useful at that stage too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Almost good enough on its own
I found this book an excellent aid to learning. The problems are difficult, but not so difficult as to discourage working them through. The instructor is key to any course, but this book definitely enhanced the learning experience from this class. ... Read more

I am both satisfied with amazon service and with the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Beautiful simple straightforward approach to thermodynamics. The postulates are well explained and the use of the axioms is highlighted. Challenging questions make this book a joy to use, great a student text as well as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Postulational Approach to Thermodynamics
Why did I buy an older thermodynamics text, one first published in 1960? I trusted the advice of earlier reviewers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid textbook
This is a solid thermo textbook. Goes over concepts and theories fairly well. There are plenty of worked out examples throughout the chapters and appendixes so you know what you're doing. The authors explain everything in a clear and cohesive manner. Somethings are overwhelming, but it is thermodynamics. Plenty of appendixes for steam tables, interroplation, unit conversions, and virial equation constants, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the useful stuff?
You could spend the rest of your life reading this book! It would be useful for any professor or A student or other intellectual studying the material in depth. But for a practicing engineer who has little available time to ponder the specifics, it would take a "lot" of effort to find material that could be put to work in this text. If you are interested in deriving the equations you need yourself, or if you're analysing a unique design, then this is the book for you. But if you are busy with standardized systems and technology, find another reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Misleading Description
I was expecting more tables and equations especially for natural convection external flow. There is also very little useful information about forced convection external flow.I also would have liked to see some sample calculations to demonstrate how to use this book better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Reference book for engineers
This is not an introductory book on heat transfer! Instead it is a thorough treatment on heat transfer in a stringent an extensive manner. This book places greater emphasis on correctness than "easy-to-understand-ness". However, if you do read it, you gain a lot compared to most introductory heat transfer books. If you are interested in forced convection heat transfer, this book gives well documented equations and charts for a great number of shapes, though mostly internal flow. This is a very serious book for serious engineers! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The science of mundane
This is a very good book to have for an engineer who deal with two-phaseflows and heat transfer, for those who design and operate nuclear reactors, thermal power plants and other thermal management systems. It provides afoundation, with an extensive collection of empirical formulae which couldbe useful if properly applied. What feels missing in this book, - and isgeneral feature of BOOKS on two-phase flows and boiling - is the heavyempiricism, the lack of a scientific concept, the absence of robusttheoretical treatment that one should possess after reading such acomprehensive compilation. That is to say, it is good for some one whoknows the subject/field, not for teaching someone about boiling heattransfer and two-phase flows.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flashing Phenomena
I think for better understanding to learn about Nuclear Power Plant System (NPPS), we must learn first about Boiling and Two-phase flow as an important part of thermohydraulicssystem in NPPS

Clearly written more for chemical engineers, as a physicist I have still found myself going back many times over to the 1st. ed., and now to the improved 2nd. ed..The book contains an ample collection of tables of thermal properties for many materials. The theoretical coverage of conduction, convection and radiation is excellent, and the example problems have a practical nature to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST THERMODYNAMICS BOOK......EVER!!!!
If you thing thermodynamics is just another boring part of Science, this book makes you feel completely interested!! Since the beginning, the main concepts are clarifyed and the difficulty increases with time, but it doesn't bother you anymore because there are no doubts.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the bests, but not a perfect
Cengel4 and Moran5 are the two best thermodynamics textbooks. Althought Cengel4 has more information and is more interesting in reading, some readers may lose the main points in the first part of the book, from the first chapter to the chapter of exergy analysis, while Moran5 is not that interesting, but very concise in the first few chapters (it would be better to rearrange the compressibility factor z after the perfect gas). Cengel4's application part is more realistic. Suggestions: Moran5 for the first half part (Cengel4 as the reference book), while Cengel5 for the second half part (Moran5 as the reference book).

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Text - "Cheap" Physical Quality
One would think for $150, this book could have been printed on heavier weight and better quality paper. Either Wiley went overboard in trying to lighten physical weight for the student to carry, or they're trying to sqeeze even more money from already ultra-high book price mark-ups.
5-0 out of 5 stars heat exchangers
heat transfer, exchange of energy in the form of heat between bodies or parts of the same body at different temperature. heat is transferred by convection, radiation, or conduction. although these three processes can occur simultaneously, it is not unusual for one mechanism to overshadow the other two. for example, heat is transferred predominantly by conduction through the brick wall of a house, a pan of water on a stove is largely heated by convection and eart receives heat from the sun almost wholly by radiation.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I don't usually write reviews of books that I have purchased but I felt that I had to for this one. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good for those with an understanding of Thermo
This book is somewhat outdated. The fundamental concepts are still there and are pretty clear, but there are still things that are assumed of the reader. These assumptions are based on the fact that the reader has knowledge of thermodynamics already. This is actually stated at the beginning of the book.If you are an undergrad taking a thermo class, I do not think this would be a good book to help you in understanding this subject more completely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and to the point
Many of today's physics texts suffer extensive bloat.Because of this, so many physics and chemisrty majors think physics is hard, especially thermodynamics.Fermi's text on thermodynamic gets to the point in a clear, logical way.All undergraduate physics and chemistry majors should own this book. You'll not only do better on your exams, you will gain a deep understanding of this key theory of your physics and/or chemistry training.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Handbook
This book is an exceptional follow up to the fluid dynamics publication by the same author. The material in this text is presented in a very straightforward manner which any mechanical engineer should be able to comprehend and apply. This is a must have for the engineer who wishes to design functional fluid thermal systems. This is my second copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Smith & Van Hess preferable!
This book is used as graduate text for GTech, ChBE course, and suffices in context of summarizing a large amount of material on fugacities in mixtures, empirical methods used for prediction and analysis of phase euilibria problems. With no previous exposure to Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, I found Smith and Van Hess to be greatly helpful in explaining basic concepts, and providing a lucid, logical development of the subject. While Prausnitz dwells at length on the behavior of mixtures, the development of the subject leaves one wanting for a lot more, and hence this book will always need atleat one complementary text like Smith's book to be a useful text. The topics explained really well in the text include fugacities in gas and liquid mixtures, and calculation of solubilities of solids or gases in liquids. Other areas of thermodynamics are either ignored or coverage is sketchy (for examples treatment of polymers, electrolytes, use of statistical mechanics, etc).

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written , Very good book
The book explains clearly the subjects making easy to understand the topics. I would suggest chem. eng to use it as a tool for understanding any specific subject in phase equilibria. It points out clearly the principles. Any book written by Dr. Prausnitz has high quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good solution thermo, but don't get rid of Smith & Van Ness
This is the text that is used for graduate ChE thermo at Georgia Tech. I found many of the chapters to be very useful and complete. For example, the chapters on estimating fugacities and solubilities in gases and liquids were very well written. However, I found the treatment of some topics, such as equations of state and supercritical fluids to be somewhat superficial and not developed very well in general. Smith & Van Ness and The Properties of Gases and Liquids were useful supplements. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!
By far the worst text book I've ever had to use.Riddled with errors.Poor and incomplete explanations of complex subject matter.Examples and problems often with errors.Does lead the student into intense studying of content, if only to understand exactly what authors are saying and whether it is correct or not.Included software worthless except for limited use in solving problems in text.
5-0 out of 5 stars The 6th edition DOES include a CD
I am holding beside me a 6th edition with the CD in the back of the book. The 6th edition DOES include a CD, unlike what the previous review wrote.I had to write this so others are not mislead.Maybe some books people are selling don't include it -- what to do?Just ask the seller if their book has a CD with it.Mine does, and others do too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book does not include CD
This book is equal in quality of content to edition 5 except that the version of edition 6 being sold here does not contain the CD normally included with this textbook. The publisher's web site states "New to this edition (edition 6) is the inclusion of additional realistic, interactive and in-depth examples on CD".This CD would also contain the software that was included with edition 5.According to the publisher's tech support however, the version of edition 6 being sold by Amazon.com is for use under the guidance of an instructor where apparently the material on the CD would not be needed. If this book is for personal use I recommend a version that includes the CD. ...
