5-0 out of 5 stars Read the Pre-Publication Manuscript and Just Ordered Latest
I have just ordered a copy of the Dr. Donaldson's Analysis of Aircraft Structures.I was fortunate enough to have used the manuscript for this book as the primary reference in two courses in structural analysis. The writer's clear writing style and insightful examples, both numerical and theoritical were of a superior quality.Having read/used nearly 100 texts in Aerospace Engineering and related fields, I would have to say this volume, even on a pre-publication basis, ranks in the top 10 in terms of quality of presentaiton as well as the overall flow and structure of the presentation.I look forward to receiving my recently ordered copy and I would recommend it to both AE and ME undergraduate and graduate students as a primary text and reference on Aircraft structural analysis. With regards to the negative comments on the use of greek characters, I completely disagree. The use of these symbols is universal in science and engineering and are tools of the trade so to speak.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good general aircraft structures book
I found this book to be a well written general structures book. More detailed aircraft analysis methods and examples would help. I resisted buying this book for years just because of the annoying use of greekletters.

5-0 out of 5 stars very rich and helpful textbook,a good companion .
i believe that critique must be held at a high level in an atmosphere of politeness.the book is very good.the book contains-in more than 900 pages!- a unique variety of many aspects of engineering interest, from theory of elasticity to standard mechanics of materials, indeterminate structures, energy theorems of structural analysis, theory of plates, approximate and numerical methods and finally introduction to the most valuable for aircraft structures,"finite element techniques".the book contains many problems, answered in detail, many photos of practical interest.the writer proceeds from the mathematical formulae & results to the physical meaning.the presentation of the "maxwell's reciprocity theorem"is of considerable practical worth, the writer's analysis of "shear flow in closed &multi-cell cross sections"&"torsion flow and twist in multi-cell cross sections" can be found only in-a few- advanced textbooks.i have read peery's book too.it is equally excellent, although written in a slightly different style!regarding the use of greek letters,it is a pleasant surprise,it reminds rhapsodies of iliad,or odyssey!the greek alphabet is so extensively used in classical technical essays!(remember TIMOSHENKO!)the bibliographical documentation is rich.concluding i want to ensure that i find the book VERY GOOD,& ADVANCED. i am looking forward to a revised edition, including -if possible-some programmable procedures, with an accompanying diskette!!i wish the best! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Homebuilders using composites
This is a good book.A large portion of the book (at the back) has exercises that you can do to try out your skills described in the book. The content is written very well and it is well illustrated. It presents the same content I have read in other books in a very nice fashion.Possibly the improved explanation is what commands the high price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to composites
This book offers a good introduction to the engineering principles that apply to composite materials in aviation. This will get you started with concepts, not figures. It will help hobbyists (especially RC builders) get a basic grip on materials and theory sufficient to improve the quality of your composite products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Aircraft Composite Construction.
The book is written in plain language, but is crafted so as to keep a complete explaination of all topics in the book. The reader will obtain a good general knowledge on composites; from how they are created, why theyare so strong, durability & choising where they are applied plusvarious tooling techniques.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A technical yet understandable review of aircraft structures
I am not an engineer, though I have an interest in designing an aircraft.I picked up the Spanish edition of this book in Costa Rica.It is very well illustrated and while technical is understandable by anyone with highschool math and a serious interest in exactly what the title suggests.Imust add willing to learn because it packs a large amount of informationand knowledge into a small package. Very good cutaway drawings of medium tolarge commercial airplanes. Not specific to small private planes.Ifyour're looking at aircraft engineering as a profession or to complementother design books without being too dry and technical, GET THIS BOOK.I'mwaiting for the new edition in English.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Just Don't Get it ??
John Cutler, the author, is obviously a very smart individual...theproblem is the book is written that way. If your not an aeronautical wiz,it's very very confusing. I am at present time using this book in school, and if it weren't for my instructor (who by the way has a degree inaircraft engineering, and is almost as confused as his students)we would belost. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Use a different book
I had to use this book in my structures class.I had no prior experience with structures before, and this book was unable to fill the gap.As a result, I've got a D in a class, and I will have to re-take it.If you have to use the Sun's book, supplement it with "Aircraft structures for engineering students" 3rd ed by T.H.G. Megson ISBN 0-340-70588-4.It follows the same notation as Sun (even some drawings are identical), and it's much, much, much more thorough. The Sun's book by itself can be useful only to people with prior experience with structures who just have to use this particular book.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Good and the Bad, mostly the Bad.
I was required to purchase this book for my Junior level A&AE Structural Analysis Course. Chock full of theory and derivations, it doesn't set forth a clear path for learning, but rather a thicket in which problems sets are solved by wildly searching backward in the book for equations and examples in order to help make some sense of the problem at hand. While the book is full of good problems, the concepts tested in the problems are not always clearly explained (What the heck is shear flow anyway?).
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Graduate Students
This book treats all kinds of problems in the aircraft structure. The contents are consice and require background knowledge in structure and PDE. I think it is good book for senior and graduate students of Aerospace department. I also used this as the textbook in the senior class. If you face obstacles, you should start solving examples with your reference books. Then the equation will be acceptable. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Book full of mistakes and poorly written.
First of all I have the teacher that wrote this book. On the first day of class he gives you the 81 pages of typos that are in the book and their corrections. It is poorly written and full of mistakes. In fact almost all of his lecture is going through the book and showing penciled in corrections and explaining why the book is wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Aircraft Structural Analysis Review
This is an excellent book for the undergraduate.Having studied Aircraft Structures at Embry-Riddle under some of the book's contributors, I recognize it as a valuable resource of A/C Structures theory.Excellentexamples and logically outlined, I highly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just say NO ... thanks

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the original!!!!!
Do not buy the 1982 edition. The 1950s book buy Peery in a legend in aircraft structural analysis. The 1982 edition was stripped by Azar, and is not worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better Off with the Original Edition...
As with Donaldson's homage (or rewrite) of Rivello, the original Perry is far superior to the update by Azar.Perry's treatment of spanwise lift distribution alone is reason to pick up the 1950 edition versus Azar's stripped down clunker.I think the author was up against a page limitation, and simply tossed a few hundred pages. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fit For Purpose
This is what the title says - for engineering students. It is not really useful for the practicing aircraft structural analyst. The mathematics presented is considerably more involved than is presented in most other airframe analysis texts, with empahsis on how stress formulae are derived.A bit over the top if all you want is to know how to analyse a practical problem, but ideal for the student who needs to know the foundations of analysis.A little bit annoying how equations are quoted by number, forcing the reader to continuously return to previous chapters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad examples, NOT clear
The examples are not clear. They only show numbers with no units and do not even explain where the numbers came from.I am a student so I had to buy this book.I would not recomend buying this book unless you absolutly have to. I have seen alot of engineering books and this one is truely one of the worst.

4-0 out of 5 stars effective
This useful book gives a strong theoretical basis on structural analysis. In fact the maths involved is advanced but clearly explained, so that it is quite easy to follow the theory presentation. Worked examples,as well as line illustrations, are very helpful, efficaciuosly completingthe expositions. In the end ,a quite comprehensive textbook. ... Read more
