5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource
This was a required test for a rocket propulsion class, but it has become an invaluable resource for many classes.Purchased for at least 20% less than other outlets.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Textbook for every Aerospace Engineer
This is the single best book on rocket propulsion systems, covering both liquid and solid rocket engines, hybrid rocket systems, and a dedicated chapter on electric propulsion. The authors include excellent illustrations and graphs to enhance the text, and practical examples which help the reader to grasp the theory. After loaning a copy of this book for over two years from my library, i finally bought it! Definitely recommended to all engineers and scientists who want to expand into the area of rocket propulsion.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best.
i have most of the books on rocket engines that are sold today.
4-0 out of 5 stars OK as far as it goes, but my goodness...
I got this for one of my kids, who was young, and wanted to know why it was difficult to make rockets.5-0 out of 5 stars GO GET IT!
As already mentioned above....do not question the price! It is really worth every single cent! I am not a LRE-designer nor do I work in any similar branche...you'll need to work yourself through the subject and especially through the mathematics, but you will be able to design your own rocket motor. It really goes into detail. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars decent text
The text is well-written and encompases a great deal about aerospace propulsion. There are few example problems, and the problems at the end of each chapter are worded so poorly it is difficult to know what is wanted without already knowing.Although the text is wonderfully instructive, it is a rather irritating textbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book - very bad index
The books structure is very instructive, its index is the badest I've ever seen. Useless as a reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Try
This is a very good book for indepth information into the working of jet and rocket propulsion. However, as a student in aerospace engineering, I find it lacking examples of any kind throughout the entire book.Without examples it is very difficult to take in and understand fully what the author is discussing.Unless you already know a good deal about engines, this might not be the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at early rocket history
In June 1952, John Whiteside Parsons, one of the founders of the Jet Propulsion Lab and of Aerojet Engineering Corporation, was killed in an explosion in his home laboratory. The first news reports described him as a Caltech scientist, and described his accomplishments at JPL and his work with other early great rocket scientists. Over the next few weeks, though, a rather different story emerged.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Wacky Rocketeer
This book was a real eye-opener for me. I had no idea that the august Jet Propulsion Laboratory was founded--at least in part--by one of the strangest men of science I've ever read about. Jack Parsons was dilatory and semi-delusional, but he was a brilliant inventor. The dreaminess that led to his excursions in witchcraft (!) were behind his vision of rockets--at a time when rocket science was a derided scientific backwater. It all makes for a really lively tale, and Pendle tells it with a lot of verve and style. I couldn't put it down--seriously!

3-0 out of 5 stars good but flawed
A fascinating portrait of the man and his time, filling in a lot of information that I've never seen elsewhere. It's a good counterpoint to the more occult-oriented writings on him, which tend to minimalize both his passion for rocketry and his self-destructiveness.There's a lot of work in this book- interviews and archival research- and it paints a remarkably three-dimensional and sympathetic portrait.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on Rocket Propulsion
This book is ideal for anyone studying chemical rocket propulsion systems or, indeed, anyone interested in the subject! This book takes you on an indepth analysis of the basic physics of rocket science and continues through to more advanced propulsion techniques such as electrical propulsion systems. It is very easy to follow and, as it was written with a lecture course in mind, tells you pretty much all you need to know about the science of rockets.

4-0 out of 5 stars "3-2-1- Liftoff with this Book"
If you remember and enjoyed the Apollo program you will love this book.Best yet play the DVD and crank it up on your surround sound when they test fire the engines.

4-0 out of 5 stars photographs
Very good photographs and diagrams of the production work involved. Also includes photos of the transportation equipment required to move huge rocket parts to the Cape and other testing areas.Text is minimal. The DVD is basic in scope.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great review of the Saturn launch vehicle family
The already impressive and prodigious output of Apogee has been further enhanced by this great volume on the Saturn launch vehicle program. The history of each piece of hardware is detailed along with each mission. As the distance in years between the events and our recollection of them grows, this volume preserves detail that may otherwise have disappeared into government archives or otherwise be lost forever before we return to the moon again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Jet Engines: Fundamentals of Theory, Design and Operation
Very good book, everything you need for the begining.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but spotty
After reading historical stuff on Whittle, Hooker, Skunk Works, and various other "JET" sources, I was hoping this book would give me lots of good info.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, not too technical
This book was exactly what I was looking for.I am a third year mechanical engineering student interning with Honeywell.I have a good understanding of mechanical systems in general, but no prior experience with turbine engines.I just wanted a book that I could read in a week or so that would help me understand the basics (What is a stator? How do these things generate thrust? etc.) This book was very dry, but to the point, which I appreciated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Atlas Missile
I was a young engineer right out of college in 1956 when I went to work at Convair in San Diego.I knew most of the people and the history of the Atlas missile.I was in the antenna design group under George Tweed....a great supervisor who latter became Chief Engineer. The work ethic was great in those days.We were working on the ICBM that had national priority.I was with Convair until 1962.This book brought back many wonderful memories of the Atlas missile program and people that worked on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronology ofAtlas Missle Launches
I really enjoyed the way this book listed all of the Atlas launches, it allowed to go back a review the successes and failure of the program as I remembered them. It also has a great collection of photographs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...
Pretty good book. Some of the stories are great - my favorites are from test failures. Some of the safety procuedures were very 'seat of the pants', as should be expected when the rules are being written as you go. Gave me a new appreciation of the bravery of the engineers and support staff involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work on an extrodinary man
This book examines in detail the life of Jack Parsons, friend of Alister Crowley and rocket scientist of Jet Propulsion Labratory fame. Lots of juicy details! The author appears to have more than a passing knowledge of Thelema, as he can explain and embellish on ceremonial material with ease. Fascinating information on a legendary man!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for most readers
I was intrigued by an article in a newspaper that summarized Jack Parson's unique life, citing this book as a source of information. As a scientist, knowing some aerojet and JPL people where Jack worked, and having spent a few years nearby in Pasadena, this book looked promising.
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I found him
I had not heard of Jack Parsons, but one boring day at work, I started surfing and one link lead to another and I came across a snippet about his life and it sounded so bizarre that I had to read more about him. What an interesting and tragic life, starting from his mother divorcing his father for adultery, while he was still an infant and ending with his mother committing suicide within hours of his tragic death.

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a useful overview, but riddled with errors
This slim book tries valiantly to summarize the entire range of space launch and in-space propulsion concepts, but does a questionable job of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book about advanced propulsion concepts ever
This book is the most complete guide I've ever seen. The best part about this book is that anyone can read it and get something from it. Even a PhD in aerospace engineering can use it as a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars New ideas in, um, rocket science
I find the subject of this book, advanced space propulsion systems, very interesting. And there's plenty of good material in the book.Still, I wish it had delved into some of the topics in greater detail. And while I tend to try to be as comprehensive as possible when I cover a field, I have to admit that Tajmar covers some topics I would actually have skipped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect melding of memoir and history
What M.G. Lord accomplished with this wonderful, moving memoir and history is the telling of the human stories behind the often dry history of space flight, including her own personal story of growing up with her father who worked for the Jet Propulsion Lab.
2-0 out of 5 stars A fraud
Billed as a memoir of "The private life of rocket science", this book is nothing of the kind. It dwells on the experiences of women and homosexuals in the space engineering field, and emphasizes their exclusion.
5-0 out of 5 stars little girl dreams do come true
I have lived in Houston since 1978 and untill I read M.G. Lord's historical memoir, had forgoten the dreams I had in my childhood that I would someday go to outer space. My imagination was stirred by the images in Comic books and the low budget movies about space travel and life in this new terrain. Space travel filled me with longings for adventure and gave me hope that were new territories if man distroyed Earth with Atomic bombs and other horrors. I loved the history in this book about the people who developed the first missles and made exploration into space possible. Astro Turf examines the ways that manned space travel has made earth larger and the universe smaller. I recaptured the sense of those earlier dreams. ... Read more
