5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have in Chemical Engineering
If you are a chemical engineer and do not own this text, you will have a hard time. This text covers all physical properties of organic, and some inorganic, gases and liquids. It offers complete theoretical development and practical equations which are amenable to spreadsheets and numerical analysis. Particularly useful is a comparison at the end of every topic showing the accuracy of each method in predicting a property. Presented in tabular form, it allows the reader to choose a method which is sufficient for his/her needs. You may decide to choose a method that is less accurate but easier to program. Every chemical engineer should have this text. My only regret is that we did not have time in undergraduate to use this text. I learned its value from watching the graduate students.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Reference
When you need physical property data, and you don't have exact information; this book provides best available estimations of the physical properties. It has been a great help to me, over the years.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Workings of ASPEN Process Model
The book is an absolutely practical treatise of applied thermodymamics. The explanations of how to use property estimation methods are excellent, but invaluable are the comments on their accuracy and recommendations as to when to use which method.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Despite the odd typographical error, this book is outstanding. It is clear, concise and quite readable.Material is presented in a manner which is easy to understand. The only slight criticisms are that my copy did not include the promised computer disk, that often the descriptions of what the code does are often hard to understand and that the binding on the book is of extremely poor quality (my copy was losing pages within days of purchase).Otherwise very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Material -- This edition is terribly made...
I gave the material in the book 5 stars, but the new edition 0 stars (at least for ~$200).My advisor just bought the newest edition (the old one finally falling apart after years of use) and it is cheaply made. The binding is already coming apart and the text is difficult to read because the text is fuzzy.Hopefully Dr. Bird will write a newer edition with some of the most recent advances and a better printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tour de Force
An astonishing accomplishment by the man who more or less invented the field of DSMC calculation. Includes a handy-dandy disk (with source) so you can run you own problem with a variety of different boundary conditions.See also Bird 1973, Phys Fluids, v16 pp1830-1834. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Just Keeps Coming in Handy
I first bought this text for an undergraduate course in plasmas, and I liked it then -- Chen's first few chapters will get you through the basics without any undue suffering (you'll hurt because the subject can be difficult, not because the text is unclear.) After spending a few months on my shelf, it reappeared for some research I was doing that required me to get comfortable with a few different types of plasma waves. Now Chen has come back into my life -- I'm taking a graduate course in kinetic theory of plasmas, and I find myself opening up this book on a daily basis to figure something out. This textbook has served me well, and if you're doing work (coursework or research) in the plasmas field, it will likely serve you well, too. The first four or five chapters are written so that a senior-level physics undergrad can understand them, so you get a nice conceptual grasp of the subject (as well as good reference material on more advanced topics.)
5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to plasma physics
This is a great introduction to plasma physics.I have used this book for both undergraduate and graduate work and it lends itself well to either.Starts out basic enough for 3rd and 4th year undergrads to work with and also has enough detailed information for more advanced graduate studies.I have to recommend this as the best introduction to this field out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still the best plasma intro
19 years later this is still the best introduction to plasma physics. Obviously written by an experimentalist. Well grounded. Emphasis on problem solving. Lots of examples. Intuitive explanations before the math. Explanations of experiments and even experimental results. Solutions in the back make it well suited for self-learners. A 3rd edition would be nice with maybe a little intro to computational methods. A vol 2 would be even nicer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for the Study of the hydrodynamics of high temperature, compressible fluids
This majisterial work by the famous Russian physicist/astrophysicist Yakov B. Zeldovich is the first and last book to refer to when studying the hydrodynamics of compressible fluids at high temperatures. The author's primary goal is to describe (as well as possible in a roughly 1000 page text) the physics, chemistry, and radiation diagnostics (i.e. radiative transfer) of a 20 kt thermonuclear explosion in the atmosphere. This book will be of use to a wide range of physicists and astrophysicists in other areas of research as well, though. The book begins with a (brief) discussion of the basics of the physics of shocks (and the hydrodynamics/thermodynamics of supersonic flow in general).More detailed topics include a detailed discussion of the ionization of the air (i.e. a change of adiabatic index from 7/5 to 5/3), the broad band spectrum of the explosion, and many others.Any absolute must have for any scientist studying compressible/supersonic flows.

5-0 out of 5 stars a treasure
This book is a true classic, written by the great Zel'dovich
5-0 out of 5 stars A kind of bible
Around Los Alamos, this enormous piece of work containing well presented theory and experimental results is a sort of timeless bible to be found in people's offices.I suspect, as it lays out the foundations of this deep field plainly accessible to scientists and engineers, that it will remain a part of Los Alamos for decades to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise slick book. Good but not great.
This is not an easy book to read. It starts off with field theory and assumes a lot of knowledge, especially from Landau's books on fluid mechanics and statitstical physics. The format of the writing is concise, almost journal publication style. Chapter 14 on angular momentum and vortices is very slick and hard to follow. Chapter's 7 and 8 on response theory and 4He introduce a lot of notation and constructs without definition or motivation. Their discussion of mean field theory in BEC, derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii from the operator formalism, and discussion of Fermi gases is clearer than in the BEC book by Pethick and Smith. There is also a discussion of optical lattices and low dimensions that is not discussed in Pethick and Smith. The other standard topics such as dynamics of a BEC in a harmonic trap are covered better in Pethick and Smith. Cooling is not discussed in this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best so far in the subject, good but not great.
Of the three main books on laser cooling and BEC that are on the market right now (Laser Cooling by Metcalf and Atom Optics by Meystre) this one is by far the best. There are a lot of details here, but unfortunately a lot more are still left out. Chapter 8, and sections 11.3, and 14.3 in particular should be rewritten. Too many equations are written down from nowhere without any derivation. Some sections, like 13.2, are clearer in the original papers. So while this book is a vast improvement over the current state of affairs, there is quite a ways to go for a truly good textbook in this subject. Still, while the quality of the exposition varies wildly from chapter to chapter, many of the chapters ARE well written, and so you can still learn a great deal from this book. Until a better book comes along, this is the book to buy in this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get into the field of Bose-Einstein condensation. Myself being a novice to the subject, I found a very well structured text with an exceptional balance between experiment and theory. All dicussions are well supported with examples. The theory parts are very detailed so that even the unexperienced reader can easily follow. ... Read more

Since the end of the 1960`s,Interest in classical aerodynamics is going down, and a great body of knowledge is in danger of being forgotten. This book is a good starting point for AE students who want to be "real" aerodynamicists, like in the good old days.
