1-0 out of 5 stars Big Joke
Beware! This book is no serious science book, it's no more than a paper-incarnation of a big poor joke..
2-0 out of 5 stars The most incomplete engineering book ever.
It's a good book it just askes me as a student to assume too much. Some of the problems at the end of the chapters are incomplete.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for starters in fluid mechanics engineering.
I bought the book by mistake since I was looking for a more physical introduction to fluid mechanics. However, once I started reading, I could not stop. The book is a pleasure to read. Every concept is explained crystal clear. No single step is skipped. Almost every concept is illustrated with one or more very detailed solved examples. It is frequent in most technical books to find how the level of clarity degrades progressively as you approach the end of the book. This is not the case. Every chapter up to the very end is carefully arranged and the level is maintained.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fluid Book
Professor Frank M. White is one of the few double professors who is also an effective author and proficient teacher. As an undergrad I took an introductory fluids course taught by the author at the University of Rhode Island, and I found him to be an extraordinary teacher who could explain complex topics in a straightforward, unassuming manner. The same style of teaching is carried over to his written works, this book in particular.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good seller
I bought a textbook from this seller. It came rather quickly and in great condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cumbersome to Use
I used this book for my second course in fluid mechanics, and I thought it was terrible. THe chapters are not organized very well, the example problems aren't presented effectively, and this problems at the ned of the chapter are not well written, as well as this book contains many errors. I don't reccommend this text to other students; I would use Munson&Okishi 's text for undergrads. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic text in a new edition.
Having worn out my original copy, purchased almost 40 year ago,
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is no joke
If you want to know transport well, this is the best book out for anyone. These guys weren't playing games when the they wrote this book. This book is serious, but don't use it as your introductory transport book beacues it is too advanced to start with, due to the fact that it is a graduate text.Once you have a grasp for the subject then you definitely need to check it out.Look in any other book and they will have it as a reference.I dont't know why these guys don't write more books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
First let me stress, this subject is hard, very hard. This may very well be the toughest subject you take in college.Regarding the book, it has some very strong points, and some very week points.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
I took my undergrad fluid mechanics course using Crowe's lightweight doorstop. I took the course from Dr. Crowe himself. He certainly knows his fluid mechanics but if you go by his course and this book then he does not seem the least bit interested in handing down his knowledge to his students. At the time, about 2 years ago I gave this a 3/5 rating based upon my own naive assumption that I had a solid undergraduate background in fluid mechanics thanks to diligently studying and reading everything in this text. But it really took a graduate level fluids course to make me realize the serious deficiencies in this textbook. Save your hard earned money this book deserves zero stars and here's why:
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay reference book
This text was used in a class where I was the teaching assistant. There were numerous complaints from students about how the text was difficult to follow, and in some cases the examples were even incomplete. This was a class for junior engineering students as a first thorough course in fluids, the text was not helpful. As a graduate student I found it to be a good reference of basic concepts (although, it was hard for me to follow some of the examples). It even goes in depth with many concepts. All in all it is a good basic reference, but totally inadequate for beginning instruction.
4-0 out of 5 stars Undergrad Masterpiece
This text is a great introduction to Fluid Mechanics. The derivations are very easy to follow, and the problems apply to many real life situations. For graduate students, it may be a little to light weight, but for undergrads it provides a broad base of information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CFD Bible
I refer to this book as my CFD bible.I first used this book approximately 19 years ago as part of a two semester course in CFD.Since that time, I have refered to this book often.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
The book is one of best books in Computational Fluid Mechanics And Heat Transfer area I have read. It not only covers basic knowledge but also talk a lot about advanced technique about CFD. It is very helpful for students just like me. After I bought this book by using a discount from coupons-center.com, I have used the book for one year. I also found CFD code is very helpful. If you are beginner to CFD coding or want to some free code as reference, this book has many good code examples. you can learn from the code examples and then can easily make your CFD code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
I learnt CFD on this book. Definitively I give it 5 star, unfortunately I can't give it 6. It covers all the CFD from the beginning to the advance level. You will use it as an undergraduate, graduate, PhD, post doctorate researcher. No kidding. There are some codes, the book contains all the information you need, it is easy to read, never criptic like many others. I suggest you to buy this book without any esitation if you are really wanting to learn and do CFD. There are more specific books on some arguments, say, turbulence, but none is more comprehensive and well written like this one. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The science of mundane
This is a very good book to have for an engineer who deal with two-phaseflows and heat transfer, for those who design and operate nuclear reactors, thermal power plants and other thermal management systems. It provides afoundation, with an extensive collection of empirical formulae which couldbe useful if properly applied. What feels missing in this book, - and isgeneral feature of BOOKS on two-phase flows and boiling - is the heavyempiricism, the lack of a scientific concept, the absence of robusttheoretical treatment that one should possess after reading such acomprehensive compilation. That is to say, it is good for some one whoknows the subject/field, not for teaching someone about boiling heattransfer and two-phase flows.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flashing Phenomena
I think for better understanding to learn about Nuclear Power Plant System (NPPS), we must learn first about Boiling and Two-phase flow as an important part of thermohydraulicssystem in NPPS

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage
I found the coverage excellent. I was originally reading another text, but that book left out critical material that makes its presentation fuzzy (which is why I looked at this book instead). This book is excellent in that it builds up all the necessary machinery from first principles and explains things in a way that someone without any prior knowledge in fluids can understand the material.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good fluids book
I like this book much more than Fay or White or Batchelor.
3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book, but very sloppy editing with mistakes
This book is very comprehensive and covers all of the major aspects of fluid mechanics. However, there are several mistakes in this book. Some of the problem solutions are wrong, but above all, the equations are often referenced incorrectly. This can make it quite frustrating for students, especially when they haven't figured out that they are being misled. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair introduction
Good introduction of many ideas in fluid mechanics. Good for reference, but it is not a good book for learning the subject. If in fact you happen to have a solid math background you may find it very boring but still has many references to more useful sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
This book introduces lots of stuffs. I will consider it4-0 out of 5 stars Great "introduction" to those well-versed in the subject

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and bound
If this book is not required for your course, do not waste your money on it.Though it covers more than Goldstein, it does so quite poorly. You will learn more from two pages in Goldstein than an entire chapter in this book. The writing is unclear and the coverage of topology is so scant that its appearance is more of a hinderance to understanding than an aid.Furthermore, the book was so poorly bound that it started to fall apart one semester into the course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely unclear. Also has absurdly silly errors.
First, some background: I am an advanced undergraduate student. I have taken much quantum mechanics, have a solid undergrad. classical mechanics understanding, and am a strong math student. I am very good at reading and understanding material from books (e.g. I have taught myself Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis or "Baby Rudin", good book by the way). As a side note, I have good reading comprehension. 2-0 out of 5 stars Even if you like this approach, do not buy this edition
This book is, to say the least, okay.Yes, other reviewers are right when they say it's much better than Marion & Thornton. But Marion & Thornton, I think, is geared toward a less sophisticated audience, whereas this book is geared toward graduate students and beyond. It is written essentially at the level of Goldstein, but offers more insights into Topology.Goldstein hardly mentions topology.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book ; bad translation
this is a classic book. however, the new 8th edition is not translated very well. i have an older english version (6th edition, 1968) that is translated much better. even where the content is the same between the two editions, the "updated" translation is worse that in the original version.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have Book for Fluid Mechanics Researchers!
This is the best and the most classical fluid mechanics book that i have read. Read it through carefully and you will get much from it. Reading it from time to time can give you many new knowledge every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete introduction to tensor analysis in 3 dimensions.
This would make a good introduction to tensors for physics students (e.g. for General Relativity), though the approach is a completely classical, using index notation; you won't find anything on manifolds or differential forms here.An interesting feature is an extensive chapter on local surface theory (e.g. Gaussian curvature, but only after introducing the full Riemann tensor), which is good for building intuition about curvature in higher dimensions. While the applications are all in n <= 3 dimensions, the mathematics is done in a way that easily generalizes to higher dimensions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aris on fluid dynamics
This book is simply magnificent. ANYONE interested in fluid dynamics should own it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the weakhearted!
This is one of those pithy classics that one needs to tread through very very carefully. The book is an uphill task, wherein rests its utility and fun. Fluid Mechanics in its simplified diluted version is served in many OTHER textbooks. This one serves it in its raw mathematical glory, and as the author says in the preface of the book, any serious engineer and fluid mechanician must realize that math must be befriended and mastered. The author makes very terse, and powerful introduction to the field. I would recommend a physicist to supplement it with a text by Faber, for Chemical Engineer to study it after the famous BSL (Transport Phenomenon), for a mathematician to pick it on any day, and for everyone in general to approach it with determination required to climb a rocky terrain. (Ah! I guess I would write an even better review if and when I finish reading it:) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Despite the odd typographical error, this book is outstanding. It is clear, concise and quite readable.Material is presented in a manner which is easy to understand. The only slight criticisms are that my copy did not include the promised computer disk, that often the descriptions of what the code does are often hard to understand and that the binding on the book is of extremely poor quality (my copy was losing pages within days of purchase).Otherwise very highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Material -- This edition is terribly made...
I gave the material in the book 5 stars, but the new edition 0 stars (at least for ~$200).My advisor just bought the newest edition (the old one finally falling apart after years of use) and it is cheaply made. The binding is already coming apart and the text is difficult to read because the text is fuzzy.Hopefully Dr. Bird will write a newer edition with some of the most recent advances and a better printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tour de Force
An astonishing accomplishment by the man who more or less invented the field of DSMC calculation. Includes a handy-dandy disk (with source) so you can run you own problem with a variety of different boundary conditions.See also Bird 1973, Phys Fluids, v16 pp1830-1834. ... Read more

This book is good at the respeact that it has a variety amount of problem of each type that the author WANT students to solve.

I have to say that this text was a little too verbose. The subject is difficult so text cannot be blamed entirely for it being boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Schaum's)
It is an excellent condition and delivered on time.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good source of solved problems in fluid mechanics
I am not a mechanical engineer. Instead, I am an electrical engineer who took an undergraduate fluid mechanics class last fall to help with some graphical simulation work I was doing. However, I still had to pass the same examinations and do the same homework as the other students who did have a mechanical engineering background, and I found this outline immensely helpful. This book is an excellent source of problem-solving techniques and exercises for anyone who is taking an undergraduate course in fluid mechanics, which is the branch of science concerned with how fluids behave at rest or in motion. This outline assumes that you are already familiar with statics and with calculus, and it makes heavy use of both subjects. There is not a lot of verbal explanation in this outline. Explanation is done mainly through the introduction of some formulas, and then some completely worked out examples using those formulas. It is not at all dry in its presentation, however, and makes heavy and appropriate use of instructive figures and diagrams. Fluid mechanics is about solving problems, and the most difficult part is analyzing the system and reducing it to a series of equations. Once this has been achieved there are a number of standard methods that can be used to solve them. This book gives a good amount of practice at allowing the student to figure out how to approach larger problems in chapters 8 through 10 - "Flow in Closed Conduits", "Complex Pipeline Systems", and "Flow in Open Channels", and also in the final chapter of the outline "Fluid Machinery". This book is a great companion to Munson's "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics", which is the best textbook on the subject that I have encountered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for Reference/Overview
Like all of the Schaum guides for subjects in Mechanical Engineering, this outline provides a good overview of fluid mechanics, but it doesn't go into a great deal of depth. 5-0 out of 5 stars Paperback vs. Hardcover
You can save at least $40 by going paperback instead of hardcover for this textbook, and the only thing missing from the paperback version is the constants written on the inside cover of the hardcover book.I just had my roommate photocopy the page for me and taped it in my paperback book.Exactly equal textbooks, not so equal price.Paperbacks are the way to go. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not particularly good.
I bought this book since it was the required text in a Turbulence course. In general, the book is well written and the explanations are clear. The material is organized in two main parts: Fundamentals (7 chapters), and Modeling and Simulation (6 Chapters). Although this book covers a lot of topics, I found that many of them are treated in a somewhat superficial and desultory way, specially in the Fundamentals part. For example, the core of the statistical theory of turbulence, K41 and scaling, is treated rather briefly in Chapter 6 (compare for example with the deep and enlighting discussion given by Frisch's book). Intermittency and anomalous scaling is treated in just acouple of pages. Chapter 5, on free shear flows, and 7, on boundary layers, contains a lot of experimental observations and plots but without a thorough analysis. This is too much of a "textbook", just for students that want to do their homework, but not a good treatise on this rich, deep and fascinating subject. To get real physical insight you need to read books like Frisch, or Mathieu & Scott. Also, Tennekes and Lumley, in spite of have been published more than 30 years ago (in 1972), still contains more interesting discussion on the physics of turbulence, that you miss in Pope's book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Modernized account of turbulence
This is an excellent addition to the turbulence textbooks. The physical meanings of equations are well explained and cast in a way that helps the understanding of the subject tremendously. In contrast to earlier textbook by Lumley and Tenneky, this book is much cleaner in explaining the conncetions between the physical phenomenon and the mathematical treatment. However, it lacks the experimental side of the subject, which, however, can be found in other classic textbooks, such as Hinze's Turbulence. This book also has lots of updates on modern modeling techniques, including PDF, DNS and LES. The exercise problems are well organized and complement the context very well. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars bestbook for pdf.
well,Professor Pope is the best professorso far onpdf modelingof turbulent. Before the book was printed, he use it as a textbook on MAE732, Turbulent analysis, in Cornell univeristy.we arereally impressed by pdf. ... Read more
