From the masters of the finite element method, this may well be the best book ever written on the subject. In this book, the authors come across as the sages of ancient India preaching what they know is the best, guiding us, and setting a stage of research for the years to come. This is a monumental piece of work in the history of engineering.

GOOD BUT....

Excellent but Too Much
This is an excellent text book as well as reference book for thermodynamics. If an undergraduate purchases it there will be many sections that will not be needed in the undergraduate course. If the authors could have produced a smaller volume directed to undergraduates only, that would be useful and more affordable. On the other hand, students who go on for graduate studies in thermal areas will find it useful at that stage too.
Almost good enough on its own

Application beyond just electronics
The author is obviously an engineer who understands the everyday practical problems a dynamicist faces.Some theory, but chock full of easy to understand, and more importantly, *useful* information necessary to putproperly designed product out the door. A tool for success
If a mechanical engineer has chosen a career in the world of electronics, I strongly recommend this easy to follow gold mine of a book. I say it is a gold mine because it applies directly to the engineers' job. There are nofluff chapters or topics. Everything applies. Steinberg has made it easy(and almost fun) to solve those every day shock, vibration and acousticchallenges. Finding the natural frequency of a body such as a PC board isso much simpler for me now. And asurprising tidbit was for me to discoversome amazing facts concerning acoustics. This is especially important asapplied to fan cooled electronic packages. Another important area of studywas packaging for transportation. How many times have we simply said"Just pack it in foam"? A total necessity
To succeed in a fast-paced introductory phyics class, one must work as many problems as one can. If you're in such a class, then for your grade's sake, I recommend that you buy a copy of this book for it contains a clear review of the theory, followed immediately by MANY, MANY example problems with detailed solutions. WARNING: You have to catch a few typos here and there.Finally, as always, try to work the problems before peeking in the answers.
Buy this book as a supplement to your textbook
Other than a few typos, this book is awesome. I learn the basic concepts from this book, and then do the problems in my textbook. This book has helped me when my professor couldn't/wouldn't. You cannot learn physics from this book only, but it is an excellent addition to any textbook.

Excellent Practical Handbook
This is an excellent, practical handbook on power generation.It contains clear descriptions of how power generation components are constructed, how they work and how to maintain them.Points in the text are illustrated through numerous detailed photographs, drawings and graphs.Topics include steam turbines, governing systems, valves, lubrication systems, gas turbines, bearings, seals, combined cycles, cogeneration, electrical components, etc. A book that's definitely part of my working "tools "
P. Kiameh's "Power Generation Handbook" has been an invaluable addition to the materials I need to sucessfully execute my job. I work in the electrical power industry and Mr. Kiameh's simple and practical approach has provided that extra assistance that allows for easy solution to our every day problems. More importantly, Mr. Kiameh has managed to complile useful and important principles relating to the Power industry in one handbook. I highly recommend this book for technical personnel involved in the Power Generation Industry.

Bloviated
Agonizing drawn out overview,with little depth.
An annoying verbiage
I was interesting in buying a professional publication relative to piping engineering and, by chance, I was able to borrow this book from a technical library before doing what can not be undone. poor book
I Buy this book because needed references, general conditions and good practice to solve practical problems of pipes. However I meet with a tangled book, of little clarity and that in general it doesn't embrace the practical topics well referring a lot to the existent norms. Anyway it serves like support to the different norms to go developing a project but alone as reference and in any case like a book of easy access to solve problems on site or the day to day problems. ... I never understood flight until I read this book
Amazing Book. there were so many small nagging questions I had on the art of flying...and this book clarified those doubts.I have read so many books on flying, watched so many videos on flight. My flight insructor has taught me flying...but this one was the glue that put it all together.

Excellent primer on Robust Engineering... how to book
This book is quite readable, considering the topic, and does an excellent job of explaining the high level strategies of Dr. Taguchi's approach to optimization and experimentation.It also covers tactical issues like how to determine your ideal function and noise strategies. Not good for me
I am the matematican and I had to start learning C.M. from this book. And I didn't like it. First chapter is some very simplified approach to linear elasticity, but it doesn't developed any intuition and reading it was waste of time. Stretch tensor was introduced with avoided notion of polar decomposition. This presentation was far less intuitive for me. The linear algerbra behind primal stresses is described and computed in details, but nowadays the student involved in computer methods and engineering must know this things in my opinion. And the language is not instuitive: me, matematican, couldn't do most of exercises after reading chapter they relate to. It tasted like old-fashioned book.

Machinery's Handbook (Large Print)
Delivery was fast and arrive in A1 condition. As a design engineer this book is invaluable in day to day operations. Being a bit older the large print is a plus for me. I have older editions of the Machinery's Handbook but periodically it pays to update to the current book. It was also the best price I had seen on the net.

Great but not perfect
This book is great, it includes lots of information, many examples and real case studies that show you how these concepts can be applied.There is a ton of information in this book and defiantly a great source to have for reference.I did get a CD in mine, and seems to work just fine.
No CD ROM and Nowhere to be Found on Net
Book is worth the price.However, there in NO CD ROM included with the book, and the directions given at the front of the book regarding where to download the software is incorrect.Neither the author's nor the publisher's websites offer the software for anyone except professors adopting the book.

Useful reference

In addition to adding chapters on structural plastics and adhesives, which are replacing the old nuts bolts and fasteners in design, the author will also update and streamline the remaining chapters.
thorough and outdated
I own both Shigley's books on Machine Design, Mechanical Engineering Design (which I would rate 5/5) and this handbook. I find this handbook is very extensive in the topics it covers, just about everything pertaining to Machine Design, but fails to elaborate in many of the key areas. Furthermore, many formulas are presented, but there are not enough examples on their use. My greatest complaint though, has to do with the print, it seems as if I had in my hand a book written out in the 60s. Drawing are dirty and unclear in many situations, tables seem as if they were cutout from another book and pasted here, then photocopied (the first drawing in the book, a man, seems as if it was photocopied on a lousy photocopier from an old newspaper), and the typeface in the graphs is plainly outdated. I understand late J. Shigley is no longer among us, but Mischke should modernize the quality of presentation when deciding to launch new editions. Overall, I recommend Rothbart's handbook over this one.

Excellent book on estimation/Kalman filter
I don't usually write online reviews but this book is so clear and useful that I really want to recommend it to others. It is well written with a good outline and summary for every chapter. It also has a pretty diverse range of topics on estimation, including an introductory chapter on basic estimation approaches (e.g., ML, MAP, least squares), and very practical extensions (e.g., state augmentation, square-root filters). Even though I am not in EE and some of the examples are thus not particularly helpful to me, I still find this book one of the best of all the estimation/Kalman filter books out there.

A Must For Design Engineers
This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved.As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. Asa design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints veryhelpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less yourealize you know. Awesome Airplane Design Reference
One of the best airplane design books out there.I rank it with Torenbeek and Roskam.I refer to it during my design studies as well as my students.

Great book
I'm a second-year aerospace engineering student and after searching for books that would tell me exactly why I'm learning what I am, this one was recommended to me. The author explains how and why designers do what they do, and even has a handwritten design example in the back. I bought the RDS software with this book, and am still figuring it out. If you do get the RDS, don't expect a Windows interface. Think DOS. At least it's not a system hog.

Necessary Starting Point to Understanding Aircraft Design
This is an excellent, and for the time being the authoratative, book about aircraft design. For anyone who wants to become an aerospace engineer reading a book like this should put any type of work they'll do in the proper context.

A Very Disappointing Book
This book is a huge disappointment.The cover is modern and promises a high-quality treatment of an interesting subject but the inside is ridiculously simplistic and leaves an awful lot to the reader to figure out on his own.The extremely abbreviated text is arcane and the "pictures" are no more than primitive line drawings.In many cases, this is woefully inadequate to understand what's going on.This 1868 book belongs in the "Antiques" section.It was a huge disappointment and simply annoying.

Mind Blowing!
I work as a Mechanical Designer/Draftsman and a Home machinist. Both of which I have a degree in, This book is worth every penny. It is interesting, detailed, handy! Although small it is packed with interesting sketches. I must warn anyone interested that this book is intended for the heavily mechanically inclined.

Great Reference Book
This book is fascinating! Originally written in 1868 it briefly presents 507 different mechanisms with a graphic for each. When I first received the book my first impression was that it was too small to be much good. Indeed, I think it would benefit from a total reformat devoting more space and detail to each mechanism. However, as I looked further I saw that there is JUST adequate size to see everything. (The formatting has obviously changed since the original which leaves wide spaces above and below each page. It occurs to me that they should be good places for making notes.) The illustrations are numbered and correspond to the text on the facing page. The drawings are simple and beautifully done in the style of the time (nineteenth century). The text is very short and to the point but again just adequate to the job of describing the mechanism.

Review on microsystem design
The book tries to cover many different topics at the same time and sometimes makes a quite messy work. However, the book has very good chapters and not so good ones. It provides a good introduction on MEMS fabrication, but a more interested reader will find difficult to fabricate MEMS with the given information. Chapters 5,6,7 and 8 are excellent, but chapters 9, 10,11 and 12 are incomplete and not easily understandable for a Electrical Engineer graduate student. Chapter 13 begins with general equations to be simplified considerably later, giving the impression to the reader that he has learned only a little about fluids. Chapter 11 is quite confusing and chapter 12 lack examples in 2D and 3D lumped models. ... Read more

Recommended for PLM Project team
We got 4 books on PLM for our project. This cost most but was best value. Lots of details about reasons and benefits for PLM, how PLMs evolving, helpful hints about how to run the PLM project, how to make the business case. Good case study examples, a maturity model to help positioning, explanation of difference between PDM and PLM, stuff about how and why people may resist. Lots of good material, lots of details, useful different views of PLM. This book is well structured and is a useful starting point for manufacturing organizations looking to implement PLM. It provided us with good direction and ideas and challenging questions to answer. Recommended reading and source of discussion and decision for a PLM Project team.

Outstanding resource for Product Lifecycle Management
Great source of PLM Knowhow. I like the overarching way PLM is treated with all 5 phases of the product lifecycle included. Product idea, product definition, product realization, product support, and product end-of-life. This is cradle to grave plm, not only product development. The focus on the product is timely as manufacturers rediscover that product is king. The text is crystal clear, concise and complete. It has everything from PLM vision and PLM strategy to nuts and bolts of PLM implementation. Its holistic approach includes processes, applications, information and people. It is the most comprehensive PLM book I have seen. This book is a PLM reference before, while and after PLM is implemented. Great reading for a PLM Director, Director of Product Lifecycle Management, PLM Manager, PLM Project manager, PLM/PDM manager, PDM Manager and anyone else into PLM whether its with Agile Software, MatrixOne Matrix, UGS TeamCenter, SmarTeam, Softech ProductCenter. Its about time a book like this came along. Sure it has strengths and weaknesses, like any other book. Read it for its strengths. But beware of its weaknesses. A weakness, it takes over 400 pages to describe all PLM. A strength, its the only book so far that covers 'real PLM' and not just a slice of PLM. Another weakness, its definition of PLM, 'PLM is the activity of managing a company's products all the way across their lifecycles in the most effective way' is more strategic than many others, this isnt weak-kneed departmental PLM for file management. Next strength though, this robust definition holds good over 400 pages and all the product lifecycle. A weakness of the book is it doesn't have the usual diagrams of PLM seen in many glossy marketing brochures. A strength, it has a set of slides you can build on to make your own presentations. A weakness, Stark the author doesn't offer a quick fix or a quick plug-in technology solutuion or a quick read. A strength, Stark's approach to PLM is innovative, far reaching, complete, business-oriented. A strength, Stark shows great understanding of what all manufacturing companies have in common, and uses it wisely.I see two main uses for this book.
