4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, would be great with soln manual
This is a great book (aside from the one by Meriam and Kriege). Illustrations are clear, examples were clear with no steps missing. However...some problems are on the challenging side--great for training engineers, but not cool for homework without a solutions manual for the sticky (and usually even numbered) problems. Recommended nonethless!

3-0 out of 5 stars Vector Mech Engin Statics
When I receive that book, it is packed with plastic sheet. It seems brand new because it is not opened yet. But, actually it is not because there are a few pages missing at the back of the book. Those pages are assumed as "The Answer Pages" of the problems from the whole book. I had to copy those pages from one of my friends. It is mestery!!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear and well illustrated
Maybe, I just pick up these concepts easily. I found this book very useful and extremely easy to understand. The sample problems are detailed and very easy follow. The "Solving Problems on Your Own" at the end of the each section provides an excellent review and will be a terrific reference. It is one of the best textbooks I have read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but dated
A great introduction to human factors but it shows its age in its focus, its examples, and its recommendations.Nevertheless, this book makes a good starting point.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the CRM specialist, or those with a keen interest
If you are in senior airline management and are wondering why things happen the way they happen and you really can't figure out why, this book might provide some help. It's the first step towards understanding the human impact in airline operations, be that pilots, cabin crew or ground crews. Far from being an expert in the field I think this work provides great background material, probably to be better understood when you hold a degree in psychology, but also readable for the un-initiated like myself. CRM specialists/trainers, Human Resource Managers etc. should have this book on their shelv(es). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Runaway very fast if your professor is using this!
I am a grad student in ME specializing in thermal engineering, I've taken undergrad heat transfer and I have strong graduate level math and fluids background. Now that you know some of my credentials, let me say I HATE THIS BOOK! It skips steps and explanations! I am leaving this review to warn anyone who is learning this subject to runaway very fast from this book, you won't learn anything and you'll suffer... There are many better convective heat transfer books out there. The only good thing about this book is the numerous references to other books. 1-0 out of 5 stars A very difficult text book to learn anything from
I get the impression that the reader from NH is the only reviewer to have tried to solve some of the problems in this book. There is no possible way to solve these problems. They are on subjects and situations not covered in the book, and even if they were, good luck in understanding Bejan's writing. He skips massive steps, giving only solutions and equations without explanations. Not everyone like reviewer Jeff Booth was born understanding convective heat transfer, so some of us must learn from books.Do yourself a favor and don't buy this one.I only hope that Dr. Bejan reads these reviews and that they discourage him from making another failed attempt at text book writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Canon of Convective Heat Transfer Theory
The best book I own. I have people lining up outside my office to borrow it. No kidding, it is that clear and concise. The development of scale arguments is without parallel. The number of extra tidbits all over the place continues to come in handy. I can't tell you the number of times I was able to skip some simulation by using some Bejan. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 9th edition 2nd printing has many errors
If you are buying this for an Engineering Statics class, I would suggest trying to locate the 9th edition, 1st printing. Although the text portion is identical, the problem sections in the 2nd printing often refer to illustrations that are nonexistant or incorrect. In addition, the many answers have no correlation to the referenced problem at all.Our instructor assigns many problems as homework, and this has caused major headaches for a majority of the class. I have compared the two printings, and the 1st printing does not contain these errors.Otherwise, the book does a very good job in explaining the various concepts.NOTE: The people at Prentice Hall are unsure if new replacements will be available until after this semester (Spring 2003).DO NOT BUY THE 2ND PRINTING IF YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK THE PROBLEMS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Introductory Statics Text
This book is good for the begining Engineering student. It contains good diagrams with clear and concise text.It should be easy to follow for anyone with a basic background in physics. My only complaint is that while it has a great selection of questions (with answers to odd problems in back), it lacked good example problems.I am the type of person who learns primarily from studying examples of solved problems and was disappointed with this deficiency. Still, with the compainon volume on Dynamics it can certainly be used as an effective primary text for first year engineering students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Notes on the 2nd Edition (1978 Edition)
I needed the Chapter on equivalent force systems this weekend at work.It provided a very helpful summary review of the material I needed, but it misled me with two sentences. Here was my task: given a resultant force and torque on a rigid body, both referred to a specific point, I needed to refer them both to a different point. The answer can be phrased as follows: "The same force acts at the new point, along with an R x F torque about the new point, where the R connects the two points, and the F is the given force. The additional torque vector about the new point is equal to the torque vector about the first point."The author misled me with these two sentences (paraphrased), "The resultant force at the new point is independent of location. However, the resultant moment at the new point depends on location, since the moments of the forces are computed using position vectors."I find this subject of great interest, but those two sentences misled me.They are not incorrect, but I hope that the author rephrased them and added more detail in later editions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Take your time
I bought the book for a class I'm taking and it's proving a bit difficult to read, the text is small compared to most books, I'm assuming to save paper. The flow of the text seems to be a bit jumpy, as I read I have to refer to pictures and graphs which aren't on the same page, which makes keeping track of ideas a bit difficult when you're constantly flipping pages to find the correlating graph. Another item is that unless you know a little about the subject, then realizing key points is difficult, because they're not easily referenced. I suggest Bold typing or using the side margins to emphasize key points would help the introductory reader. So, as an introductory text the book is hard to read because the book is written more for the seasoned professional who is looking to brush up on some finite analysis techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great all-around optimization book!
This work is one of my favorite all-around books on the subject of optimization. It covers a lot of ground in linear and nonlinear areas, and it is very well written from a pedegogical point of view. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I found the explanations of SQP and GRG methods to be insufficient. As these two techniques are among the most robust and well-accepted for general NLP problems (which are essential for many engineering applications), this was disappointing.I hope Professor Rao will write a fourth edition with improvements in these areas.Otherwise, this book stands out as a useful and practical reference for both students and practicing engineers. If I had to have only one book on optimization, this would be it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An update to the review above
Since writing the above review in 1999, I have become familiar with someof the more recent methods for linear optimization. If you are interestedin linear/integer optimization, you may be interested to know that thisbook discusses the simplex method and its derivatives, and describes Gomorycutting plane method for integer programming.Lest you get carried away bythe unbridled optimism expressedin the previous review , please note -this book does not cover iterative linear programming methods such asinterior point methods, EXCEPT for a rather good, detailed description ofKarmarkar's 1984 method (projective transformation), with a numericalexample. Another omission is trust-region methods; however line-searchmethods are discussed. So if 0/1 optimization, interior point methods,semi-definite programming, trust-region methods is your cup of tea, shopelsewhere. I'm rolling back my previous rating from 5-stars to 4-stars on this count.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most valued addition to my bookshelf.
I am a sucker for books on applied mathematics. This book ranks among my most valued ones, and is always within constant reach for reference on optimization algorithms. The book covers linear programming, nonlinearprogramming, geometric programming, dynamic programming, integerprogramming, and stochastic programming. A wide array of methods which seemimpressively complete are covered in this 903-page book. The addressing ofthe topics is geared more towards making the reader understand how thealgorithms were derived (which is welcome, in contrast to chasing up theoriginal research papers), and using them. Just about every method isillustrated clearly with examples - a welcome feature of the book. Oneminor drawback is that all examples and exercises that are applied toengineering, are drawn from mechanical and civil areas (note: there arealso many examples that are mathematical toy problems). Having said that, Imust hasten to add that I am an electrical engineer, and I have no problemat all in using this book. Strongly recommended for people who work withoptimization algorithms! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best in its area
This is a rather complete presentation of the knowledge of controls and dynamics needed to design, specify, and analyze spacecraft control sytems. No navigation or guidance is covered.Of course no reference to same is made in the title. The book is primarily a composition of basic control background including modern topics like H-infinity.The H-infinity control discussion is the most understandable out there and its limitations are spelled out clearly, perhaps for the first time. The structural dynamics and controls sections are outstanding with some novelty.Interleaving is not unique to this book, however.Bryson covers it in Control of Spacecraft and Aircraft.Quite frankly, at this point in time most of the spacecraft controller design methodologies are handbook in nature and what is most needed is a good background in the basics that extends into the actual design domain enough to be useful.Bong Wie has provided that in this book for controller design to a greater extend than any other written thus far.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the literature
Bong Wie's "Space Vehicle Dynamics and Control" is, by far, one of the best books ever published in the AIAA Education Series. It packs a lot ofinfo on a multitude of subjects which don't usually come togetherin a single book. The mathematical preliminaries and the sections ondynamics and control of flexible structures are particularly well done.(This is perhaps the first time a textbook covers the interlacing propertyof poles & zeros of certain transfer functions, particularly thoseassociated with flexible structures.) In addition, the inclusion of the"H-infinity" topic the way the author did it is very good since,in general, books do not feature the subject in such a concise, objective, useful way. The same is true of the section on halo orbits, as well. Bestof all, Wie's having included Kharitonov's theorem comes as a blessing, since the issue is rarely seen in non-European texts.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book they forgot to proof!
This is one of those books that spends more time telling you what you will learn from a chapter than what is actually presented in the material. It also asks review questions at the end of chapters that isn't explaineduntil further in the book, if at all. Misprints are numerous and in somecases the material is just plain wrong, such as paragraph 1 on page 137which claims that figure 23-1 can be locked off for safety reasons. Even iflocked the start button would cause the motor to run if held in the onposition. Hardly a 'safe' circuit. Our school required this book as part ofits motors control course and every single student in our class is totallyfed up with the errors and mistakes as well as the brevity of explanations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfectnumerical methods book as one can get for a 1st course.
A great textbook for a first course in Numerical Methods as it gives an extensive yet detailed coverage of numerical techniques that form the base for more advanced work in CFD. This book is based almost entirely on the finite difference method for solving differential equations. A chapter addresses finite element techniques but it only a primer; you will need a textbook solely devoted to FEM. This book is written for a mechanical engineer, as most of the governing equations are invariably from the areas of heat transfer, fluid flow, gas dynamics and solid mechanics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Former Student Recommendation
As a former graduate school student of Prof. Hoffman (who took his graduate level class on numerical methods) I would only expect nothing but excellence from one of his publications. After 15 years, I continue toregularly use many of the methods presented by Prof. Hoffman in my dailyengineering work.
